iTunes Review
For nearly three decades, Michael W. Smith has been combining fervent Christian testimony with a sure feel for melody and hooks. Wonder is firmly within this tradition with its mix of anthemic rockers, reverent praise numbers and poignant character vignettes. “Save Me from Myself” and “Wonder (Not Far Away)” are aggressive synthesizer-driven tracks that proclaim their faith in urgent terms. Often Smith adopts an introspective tone that helps to make Wonder his most personal album in years. His earnest, slightly raspy vocals bring an intimacy to tunes like “You Belong to Me” (a loving valentine to his wife Debbie), “I’ll Wait for You” (a country-tinged statement of belief) and “Welcome Home” (a moving account of loss). Worship songs like “Run to You” and “Take Me Over” balance more pop-oriented pieces like “Take My Breath Away.” A particular standout is “Leave,” a powerful narrative that finds inspiration amidst tragedy. Smith is an old hand at making such reality-based accounts of salvation work in a pop/rock context.

Back to Form
As a fan since the i2(eye) tour in mid-80's, have been underwhelmed by last few albums, and this could have been my last Smitty album - yep, that serious. But must say, this is a return to such quality discs as "Live the Life" and "I'll Lead You Home." Crunching guitars, sweeping strings, edgy vox, thoughtful & heartfelt lyrics - it's all here. Seems like a lot of time and risk was put into this one, unlike the past few that just seemed fulfillments to record company contracts. This one's reset the bar very high for album #23. Just don't rush it, Smitty. Here's evidence of quality taking time. Bravo!
Saved me from myself....
MWS's music has "saved me from myself" more times than I can count over the last 25 years. There is just something extremely comforting and heavenly in his voice and his lyrics. "Wonder (Not Far Away) has an 80's synthesizer feel that is fun and familiar to his long time fans, while "One More Time" will certainly have appeal to seniors 2011 as a potential class graduation song. "Save Me From Myself" is easily my first pic off this new album, although I'm sure I will find many favorites as the playlist gets worn in. Thanks, Smitty for so many years of God blessed songs ... From my scratched albums, well worn cassette tapes, stacks of cds and new itunes tracks, you have defined "timeless music" for my generation.
Brilliant Musical Journey
Smitty does it again! Not sure this man can write a bad song.....absolutely BRILLIANT from start to finish! The lyric on 'Welcome Home,' 'Leave,' and 'Take Me Over' will make you cry....and 'Take My Breath Away' and 'Save Me From Myself' will make you want to thank God over and over again for who He is and what He's done.
WELL DONE, SMITTY! ASTOUNDING!!!
