Album Review

Pilot Speed's second album, Wooden Bones, isn't a progression from their 2006 debut Into the West so much as it is a continuation. The band is still heavily indebted to U2 and Radiohead, which means they often sound quite a bit like an American Coldplay, one that lacks the pomp and circumstance that puffed up Viva la Vida. There are no orchestras for Pilot Speed, just guitars and keyboards (along with some tape effects) kicking up plenty of atmosphere, which the band undercuts with their innate politeness and small sense of scale. It all shimmers beguilingly, never flirting with darkness or pop melodies, existing entirely as clean space rock that remains ever so earthbound.

Great CD

I love Pilot Speed and this CD is no exception. Great stuff. Buy It!

Ahhhhhhh! Bigger Better Stronger!

I have to admit, i was expecting to hear a complete set of "into the west" part 2 songs, but to my pleasant surprise this album takes on an entire "refreshing" mix of it's own. Slightly reminiscent of the style and smooth wailings of "alright" and "overrated" this is truly a gem. My first thinking was "why isn't this being hyped more" but then why spoil a good thing, those who know great music when they hear it, know to well how quickly a hyped album can become a bands demise. This is by far not your typical everyday "on the radio for the kids" and "don't know any better" to listen to. Pure alternative rock from beginning to end. Wooden Bones is an excellent example of this. Thank you for such a beauty. Each song just keeps getting bigger better and stronger, love it! i think you will to, unless top 10 repeats and kiddy pop are your thing. Enjoy.

Seriously - why are these guys not HUGE?

Okay, I'll admit, this album took me a few more listens, but now I'm enthralled with it... several tracks in particular: Up On the Bridge, What is Real What is Doubt, and Wooden Bones for the more unique, slightly subdued stuff, and Ain't No Life, Signs of Life, Today I Feel Sure, Put the Phone Down for the more traditional pop/alt/rock goods. I can't understand why these guys are not just HUGE in the U.S. Seriously, they should be all over the radio, on the award shows, and in the same conversations as Coldplay, The Fray, U2, and so on. And for $7.99?? Are you kidding me?? Buy this album.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Originally forming as Pilate in the early 2000s, the Toronto-based rock quartet Pilot Speed changed their name to such in mid-2006 to avoid possible lawsuits as their music spread internationally from their native Canada, especially due to the "litigious nature of the United States" (as taken from a message on the band's website). Pilate were born in 2000 after vocalist and New Zealand native Todd Clark left the music program at the University of Western Ontario where he'd been studying and placed...
