Album Review
Arriving after years of sonic bombast in Hüsker Dü, the reflective, acoustic nature of Bob Mould's first solo album, Workbook, was a bold statement of renewal. Like all of Mould's work, it's an intensely introspective record, finding him purging demons left over from the dissolution of Hüsker Dü. Instead of relying on raging guitars, Mould explores a wide variety of styles, from pure pop ("See a Little Light") to reflective folk laced with cellos. It's an astonishing array of styles, and the songs are among Mould's finest. For many observers, the record established him as a major songwriter, but it also established a way for underground post-punk artists to mature — echoes of Workbook could be heard throughout the '90s, from R.E.M.'s elegiac Automatic for the People to Nirvana's use of cellos on In Utero and Unplugged. But Workbook remains a stunning work of individuality, marrying a distinctive body of songs with an original musical vision. Occasionally, the production is a little too pristine, but the power of the songs cannot be diminished.

Still Amazing...
First off, Bob acoustic is still louder than a lot of bands plugged in.
I bought this album when it came out (yes... on vinyl)and it is still a touchstone for me.
Amazing guitar work and densly packed with emotion this first post Husker album still resonates with the feedback from the burnout of that amazing band.
Must have for Husker and Bob fans.
Haven't checked out the live tracks... not availible on the original.
Bob Mould Solo, Phase 1
Bob starts out his first solo excursion (between the previous Husker Du and the later Sugar) with Workbook. Perhaps he'd been saving these songs away...they might have been just too melodic for a punk band. The acoustic intro of Sunspots served notice he was moving in a new direction, and he pulled it off in most convincing fashion. This album is great - excellent songwriting and intricate guitar playing alongside a few tracks with his own "wall of sound" layers of chords. It's a triumph of the first order and highly recommended.
The live tracks were added later to the original album, and are the same ones originally available on the compilation Poison Years, which mostly highlighted the two solo albums he released before forming Sugar (Black Sheet Of Rain being the second). These live tracks have more bash and crash than the originals. Of these, Brasilia Crossed With Trenton is the best and I prefer this version to the original, but unfortunately it's an "album only" track. A close second is the cover of Shoot Out The Lights. If you're buying tracks individually, I would recommend adding this one.
Wonderful Debut
Sounding like a punk Richard Thompson, Bob Mould's debut solo record is a real treat. "Sunspots" suggests he has something to prove post-Husker Du, but the rest of the album is solid, well written songs, perhaps a bit less emotional than the follow-up _Black Sheets of Rain_. "Wishing Well", "Poison Years" and "Dreaming, I Am" are my favorites. I don't care for the live tracks tacked on to the end.
