iTunes Review

At 74, Merle Haggard is more than a legend; he stands as a living reminder of what country music can be when it shows authenticity and courage. Working in Tennessee finds this enduring artist contemplating his life and the world around him with a wry, sometimes ornery gleam in his eye. Featuring a batch of fresh tunes written or cowritten by Haggard (along with some old favorites), the album has an easygoing air, emphasizing acoustic picking over electric licks. Singing in tones as mellow as aged whiskey, Merle dishes out jaunty Texas swing (the title tune), offers a poignant lost-love ballad (“Sometimes I Dream”), and gets philosophical about life’s rough patches (“Laugh It Off”). “What I Hate” and “Under the Bridge” reflect his populist streak, while “Too Much Boogie Woogie” lets him vent about Nashville's current state. Merle’s son Ben and Willie Nelson stop by for a timely new version of “Working Man’s Blues," while wife Theresa duets on a sassy take of “Jackson” (recorded in tribute to old friend Johnny Cash).

Love Merle.

Real country.

All Hail The Hag

Merle Haggard stands as possibly the single most important link to country music still living, in regards to his writing and singing - both of which are unparalleled in content and quality. Although a few songs here have already been previously released by Hag, what is endearing about this CD is that Haggard continues to stick to his guns and do the music he loves and does best, which is real country music. Merle proves to us once again that the cream rises to the top, regardless how long it's been in the bucket. All hail the Hag...

Working in Tennessee

I appreciate Mr. Haggard's efforts in producing Working in Tennessee but his masterpieces are in the past when anger and passion were in his blood. We have gotten older and sometimes wiser so I hope Ben takes off where Merle has slowed down.

As a performer and a songwriter, Merle Haggard was the most important country artist to emerge in the 1960s, and he became one of the leading figures of the Bakersfield country scene in the '60s. While his music remained hardcore country, he pushed the boundaries of the music quite far. Like his idol, Bob Wills, his music was a melting pot that drew from all forms of traditional American music — country, jazz, blues, and folk — and in the process, developed a distinctive style of his...
