iTunes Review

The Dead's previous release, Live/Dead, was filled with winding and intense psychedelic jams, and it did nothing to prepare the world for Workingman's Dead's stunning, understated country rock. A closer look, however, reveals that the turn was not so surprising after all. For one, the Dead had strong roots in acoustic folk and bluegrass before they began to plug in and turn on. What's more, the country bug had already started to bite the rock world as artists recoiled from the excesses and chaos of the late '60s. Boasting beautiful harmonies, well-crafted songwriting, and a deep appreciation of country, blues, and folk, 1970's Workingman's Dead proved that the band was as adept with sharp-eyed acoustic roots music as it was with free-form rock odysseys. Most of these cuts--from twangy rockers like "Casey Jones" and "New Speedway Boogie" and sublime ballads like "Uncle John's Band" and "High Time" to country romps like "Dire Wolf" and "Cumberland Blues"--found a permanent home in the Dead repertoire for decades to come.

Dead Prime

The Dead must have worked their asses' off for this album, cause its amazing. The songs have a little southern rock, western feel to them, a light kinda allman brothers style. Very catchy. The bonus tracs are always niec, but nothing special. Uncle John's Band, Dire Wolf, New Speedway Boogie, Cumberland Blues, and Casey Jones are all great hits. LONG LIVE THE DEAD RIP JERRY

"Workingman's Dead"

Jerry and the gang pay their respects to bluegrass and country on this 1970 album. Loved by critics who are known to normally criticize the Dead's work. Key Tracks: "Casey Jones", "Uncle John's Band" "New Speedway Boogie (Alternate Version)", "Dire Wolf" Listen to More: "High Time", "Mason's Children"

My favorite Dead album

I must have worn out 3 or 4 copies of the original vinyl version of this quintessential album. Finally, I can play these songs to my heart's content without having to worry that my needle is going to burn a whole through the record - thanks iTunes. To me this is the Dead at their best, a fusion of southern music and rock with some of the best harmonies of all time. These are real songs, not overproduced, just good old honest music. The bonus cuts just add to the value of the album. A must for any of Dead Head.
