iTunes Review

Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello continues to explore where his alter-ego as the Nightwatchman can take him. Just as Rage were usually political, Morello plays the role of protest singer here. But where he stood solo on his previous outings, here he adds a backing group, the Freedom Fighter Orchestra. The duet with Ben Harper for “Save the Hammer for the Man” demands that blame and anger be saved for those who are the cause of the workingman’s problems. “The Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse” is a somber folk ode that features Morello’s most compassionate vocals to date, with the desperate “God Help Us All” coming in a close second. “Black Spartacus Heart Attack Machine” is his most brittle, a piece of stuttering jump-cuts and angry demands. “Facing Mount Kenya” warns that the consolidation of world power is a global menace. “Stray Bullets,” “World Wide Rebel Songs” and “Union Town” play with the power of London Calling-era Clash. It’s a compelling and challenging listen.

seriously?

extremely bad song writing, the singing is worse. Tom cannot carry a song vocally. The melodies have no depth or individual character. He is simply trying to pull off something he is not capable of and it serves only subpar drivel. Maybe a RATM reunion would be time better spent.

Getting worse...

Morello is slipping with each Nightwatchman album. First one was original and I liked it a lot, this new album however is half already available songs and the lyrics are not up to par. Rage needs to just bring it together and put out new material. One Day as a Lion and The Nightwatchman just don't cut it...

The Nightwatchman is the alter ego of Tom Morello, guitarist with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. While Morello is best known for his bracing mix of hard rock fury with hip-hop accents, as the Nightwatchman he performs as a solo acoustic singer and songwriter, playing self-penned songs that reflect his leftist political beliefs. Born in New York City in 1964 and raised in Libertyville, Illinois by his mother (a longtime political activist), Morello taught himself to play guitar while he...
