Album Review

Originally four cellists, now three cellists and a drummer, Finnish quartet Apocalyptica have worked hard to become more than a mere covers band since their 1996 debut, Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos. Their early material established them as astute interpreters of the thrash metal genre, finding a gold mine in the tension between their subject metal and their instruments of choice, but as their reputation grew they sought to become full-fledged members of the heavy metal community. By the time of 2007's Worlds Collide, Apocalyptica had completed the transition from chamber room instrumentals to pulsating neoclassical metal, a feat amazingly achieved without the use of conventional guitars. With drummer Mikko Sirén in tow, the three founding members play distorted cello in the style of Slayer and Metallica, alternating bass picking, distorted riffing, and clean melodic lines with or without a collaborating vocalist. The one spot on Apocalyptica's record to date has been the distinct lack of a great album to complement a catalog of musical accomplishments, but Worlds Collide is very much the antidote to that problem. Driven by the slick modern rock single "I'm Not Jesus," sung by Slipknot's Corey Taylor, the album expertly bridges the gap between accessibility and the group's more progressive instincts. Atmospheric opener "Worlds Collide" is as succinct a summary of Apocalyptica's musical style as can be, literally and sonically, contrasting sections of polite melodicism and bone-shaking thrash. The album's coup de grâce is its one piece of non-original material: "Helden" is a cover of David Bowie's "Heroes" auf Deutsch, with Rammstein's Till Lindemann handling lead vocals, and the cellists' rendering of the main theme is so seamless, so perfect, that it's hard to remember just how much differently the original was handled.

Customer Reviews

New album, great album

So I was psyched to be at the concert for this in LA. Truly an awesome group, and awe-inspiring when they play live. If you have the chance, I highly recomend. After that side note, here's the review; world's collide contains only works written by apocalyptica (and Gontier) for apocalyptica; no covers. And frankly, I'm glad. In this one, they begin to show some real flair for music and continue to define their sound as eclectic and unique. Of course, this is not without stumbles; some songs (Ion in particular) are a little lackluster - good, but get boring after numerous listens (which I've given this entire album). Top songs: Grace, Last Hope (if u like drums, this is ur number one), Worlds Collide, I'm not Jesus, and Peace. I Don't Care is good, but it borders a bit too much on the emo. peace

Breathtakingly different

I was first told about these guys by a friend of mine, and they are amazing. Their instrumental songs are exquisite, and totally metal. I love the idea of having heavy metal music, then putting in a cello. The idea is original, and fabulous, and as long as these guys keep doing their original instrumental stuff, they're going to go far. The instrumentals are way better than the songs with vocals, but the vocal songs are good as well. The songs are all original, which is amazing, buy this one before listening to their covers (though they are good as well. Definately recomend it, heard the deluxe version was good as well.

Great band that not only can play their hearts out, THEIR HOT!

Unfortunately, most "talent" out here today seems to focus on the looks of the performer instead of the quality of the music. Let me just say that Apocalyptica has the best of both worlds... The "Worlds Collide" truly. The music on this album is awe-inspiring. I, who am also classically trained like the members of Apocalyptica, never knew that the cello could be a metal instrument! I'm going to see them live in October because they are also a wonderful live act. Hot men...crazyamazinggood music...it doesn't get any better!
