Album Review
The multi-instrumentalist who calls himself Govinda was born Shane O'Madden, and his primary instrument is the violin. Under normal circumstances you might expect his music to draw on Celtic traditions, but Worlds Within is actually a dark, slinky exploration of gypsy, Indian, and Middle Eastern textures and modalities, all wrapped up in percolating breakbeats and dubwise production techniques. At times the music threatens to get mushy, but numerous guest vocalists help prevent the proceedings from dissolving into generic electro-worldbeat pablum: Juliana Sheffield contributes gorgeous Elizabeth Fraser-like crooning on "Los Golondrinas," creating something that sounds like a fusion of Cocteau Twins and Harold Budd; "10,000 Years" rolls along nicely on an ethereal funk beat, helped out by dancehall chatting courtesy of an unidentified DJ; on "Something," Kayt Jourdanson lets her cool, laid-back voice be used as raw material to be shredded like silk and wafted along on a Hindustani-inflected modal groove. Very highly recommended.
Customer Reviews
if Govinda was a woman, I would marry her.
first off, stop reading this review now and buy the CD! If you still need further sway, read on I got it in stores when it came out and have loved it ever since. the cornucopia of different worldly sounds collide into a grooving unique techno beat that makes Govinda a soul quenching feast your the ears. I have the ut most respect for this artist in combining so many different aspects and sounds in his music. and his tireless effort paid off the first sound, "charming the serpent" is my personal fav followed closely by tach 2 4 6 and 9. I wish I tunes had more of this artist. I have a previous album "oh earthly gods" as well. it is a great CD with "nomads” being the best song, I would give it 5 stars as well but I can't get over how annoying his grandmothers voice is on one song called “Diva Dora my grandmother”. she absolutely ruins an otherwise absolutely perfect sound. why govinda, why?? unfortunatly you have to go out and buy that one. but I digress. This album has no grandmothers, a lot of groove. And is just great music. “World Within” gets my acclaimed 5 stars!!! each album and song by this artist is totally different and eclectic. so have fun! Owen Wilson out!
You think this one is good . . . .
There are 5 or 6 CDs of Govinda now that could be on here. O Earthly Gods, Entwined and Entranced, Echos of Eden, Evilution and Erotic Rhythms From Earth are just a few of his releases. He's also created a beautiful CD with GFire as well called Electric Sadhana. Not to mention the fact that he has a vinyl record called Ethnic Confusion-ism that would be GREAT here (since I no longer have a working record player). This is the tip of the iceberg, people. Go out and buy these CDs!!
Top Album ever!
Words cannot convey the emotion, passion, creativity, and overall expression that this album posseses. Of all the albums I own, I listen to this one most often. The music within this particular album are all songs that can be played for almost any individual or in any circumstance and everyone can agree it's a fabulous mood-setter. It's one of those albums that anyone will like and whenever I throw parties or get-togethers or just want to chill by myself, this is what I play. The feeling I get with "oneness" and "connection" with this album is more than supernatural, it's a conflaguration of spiritual transcendental methodology.
