Album Review

Worm Ouroboros (the name refers to a mythological snake that encircles the world, eating its own tail) are a San Francisco-based trio composed of bassist/flutist/vocalist Lorraine Rath, guitarist/vocalist Jessica Way, and drummer Justin Green. The music they make is avant-garde psychedelic metal that incorporates influences from folk, classical, and doom, as well as the work of female artists and female-led groups including Jarboe and Amber Asylum. It rarely gets truly heavy, save in the latter half of nine-plus-minute tracks like "Winter," "Riverbed," and "Pearls" — most of the time, the throbbing bass underpins delicate guitar melodies and ultra-clean vocals. But the pretty stuff is plenty pretty enough to be worthwhile on its own, not just as the lead-in to the rockin' stuff. Listeners will undoubtedly find it quite pleasurable to drift along with the gentle female voices and guitar like water dripping from the roof of a chilly yet surprisingly well-lit cave, without tapping an angry foot and muttering, "Will they just step on the distortion pedal already?!?" If your favorite Black Sabbath song is "Planet Caravan," wow, is this ever your album.

Weird...

...is somebody who rates an album he doesn't even own based on the short samples available in lo-fi on iTunes. Even weirder is his foolish belief that he has some basis to pass judgment on the album. Ignorance given voice leads to inane BS like "It probably won't appeal to you, but it just might."

The tragedy is this mindless reviewer might have discouraged people from buying this amazing album. Worm Ouroboros are one of the most amazing and unique metal bands in existence. I discovered this album a few weeks ago and have played it at least once a day every day since I bought it. I ordered the physical CD from Profound Lore, along with all the albums by bands with some of the same members, like Amber Asylum and The Gaunt. It's that good. Somehow the album manages to make metal beautiful, profound, and heavy, all on the same album, and even within individual songs. The female vocals and use of unique instruments like flute and strings add incredible depth and power to the unique atmosphere this band creates.

Download the album, or even better, for the same thing you'll pay here, order the CD (including shipping) from Profound Lore. If you haven't heard Worm Ouroboros, you need to - anyone who appreciates progressive rock, post-rock, or metal, and has an open mind to something other than the standard guitar-bass-drums-male vocals formula should love this album.

i actually have the album

unlike the first reviewer. samples don't do this type of music justice. samples are for those with no attention span and think that if a song doesn't do it in the first thirty seconds, then move along. this is well written, atmospheric, heavy music. the metal is there, but broaden you're definition of heavy. this is pretty fricken good music - beautiful, heavy, dark, honest.

Weird...

...in a good way. Very interesting. I haven't actually bought the album, only listened to the samples. There's seems to only be occasional singing, and a lot of really atmospheric, awesomely weird music, if you can call it that.

Do yourself a favor and check out the samples. It probably won't appeal to you, but it just might.
