Album Review

Verve Records has purchased the rights to reissue vocalist Melody Gardot's debut recording, which came out in 2006. Two years after suffering a near fatal automobile accident, the differently able Gardot triumphed in accomplishing what many others, including her, could only dream of. This project has her singing and playing guitar and a little piano, but more so presenting this project of all original material. Gardot has an interesting personal story, but even more intriguing music that straddles the line between lounge jazz, folk, and cowgirl songs. She's part sophisticated chanteuse, college sophomore, and down-home girl next door. Her innocence, sweetness, and light are very alluring, much like the persona of tragic songbirds Eva Cassidy and Nancy LaMott. Feel empathy for Gardot, but don't patronize her — she's the real deal much more that many of her over-hyped peers. "Quiet Fire" is definitely her signature tune, as it speaks volumes of where her soul is at, in a jazz/blues mode, yearning for true love. The title track follows a similar tack, a slow, sweet, sentimental slinky blues that will melt your heart. A finger-snapping "Goodnite" leaves you wanting that night to continue, but also exudes a hope that permeates the entire recording. She might be a bit down on men during the nonplussed "All That I Need Is Love," but her subdued optimism glows cool. "Sweet Memory" might possibly parallel Feist or perhaps KT Tunstall in a rural country mode, while "Gone" is clearly folkish, and the slow "Some Lessons" expresses a contemporary Nashville precept. The laid-back music behind Gardot is basically acoustic, incorporating hip jazz instrumentation, especially the trumpet of Patrick Hughes and occasional organ, Wurlitzer, or Fender Rhodes from Joel Bryant, but with twists including violin, lap steel, and Dobro. Clocking in at a scant 33 minutes, the concise nature of this recording and these tunes perfectly reflects the realization that life is precious, every moment counts, and satisfaction is fleeting. Likely to be placed in the Norah Jones/Nellie McKay/Madeleine Peyroux pseudo jazz/pop sweepstakes, Gardot offers something decidedly more authentic and genuine. She's one-upped them all out of the gate. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi

If you like Norah Jones, you'll love Melody Gardot

Mix in a dose of Norah Jones, toss in a little Diana Krall, resurrect Billy Holiday, a slice of Carole King and add just a touch of Joni Mitchell, and you will have something that sounds a lot like Melody Gardot. I purchased this album about 4 months ago when it was sold only through an independent site. One of the best "Wicked Ride" appears to be missing from this version. However, check out 'Love Me Like a River Does" and "Worrisome Heart". If you like soulful and jazzy you'll be a fan for life.

C'mon iTunes, get "I've Got You Under My Skin" already!

Melody Gardot's rendition of "I've Got You Under My Skin" is fantastic! Smooth and sultry. Have you heard it on that Chevy commercial? If so, you love it. I'm getting sick of hearing great songs from tv ads, struggling like heck to figure out the artist's name online, then disappointed to learn that the song is not available on iTunes! Arrgh! iTunes should make this sudoku puzzle-esque process much easier for music buyers...especially the relentlessly obsessive ones :D Recent success stories include the song from Apple ("New Soul" by Yael Naim) and the one from the super bowl Doritos ad ("Message from Your Heart" by Kina Grannis). But, Melody Gardot's version of the Frank Sinatra classic and Melpo Mene's "I Adore You" from the Volvo ad continue to haunt me :D

Sultry & Sexy

This discovery begins with Peggy Lee's 1963 album "Mink Jazz"...I was listening to my 1998 remastered disc, checked the iTunes suggestion box and noticed Gardot's album cover. I read the short bio and found Melody Gardot's "twist of fate" accident interesting but it was the samples that caught my attention; by the third listen tonight I am alsolutely intoxicated by this set of tracks...moody, sultry & sexy and all-together lived-in yet totally alive & fresh! I'm lost in Melody's brilliant phrasing & knowing delivery and man, the girl even purrs a scat or two! Wow!

The story of vocalist Melody Gardot is as remarkable as any who perseveres against abject adversity. Born in New Jersey in 1985, she took up piano and played as a youngster on the nightclub scene of Philadelphia, influenced by jazz, folk, rock and pop musics. At age 19 she was a fashion student at the Community College of Philadelphia.
