iTunes Review

Would It Kill You? is the second release by peppy, playful popsters Hellogoodbye. Coming four years and some major lineup changes since their 2006 debut, this is an understandably different release than Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!. The most obvious difference is the lack of keyboards and synths in favor of guitar-based songs. What remains the same however is bandleader Forrest Kline’s knack for crafting high energy tunes with strong melodies and lyrics and the hooks to match. There’s also plenty of variety and endearing complexity at work here. “Finding Something to Do” and “You Sleep Alone” feature dense, driving guitars and crisp, head-bobbing drumming; “Betrayed By Bones” injects infectious bleeps and blips into the chorus; Kline croons over a strummed ukulele on “The Thoughts That Give Me the Creeps”; “Coppertone” is buoyed be wistful strings; and the horns on “Getting Old” are brilliant. Would It Kill You? is a charming and mature release that’s shows the band leaping forward without abandoning the catchy bubblegum roots that made them so fun in the first place.

AOTY!

best record of the year!

This is HAPPY music.

I could go on and on about how much I love this new stuff from Hellogoodbye. They have changed alot over 4 years, but this is such a GOOD change. Forrest Kline has matured in so many ways with his music. You can tell that these songs mean alot, and he pulls that off in a very fun and feel good album. The album has a very unique modern-retro sound. So perfect.

It's good for bands to change, it shows progress. This album shows alot of creativity and i'm glad the band had the freedom to do this independently, and release an album how they wanted too, even if it meant a longer wait. Well worth the wait.

Thank You, Hellogoodbye. LOVE THIS ALBUM.

Biography

Formed: 2002 in Huntington Beach, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A group of quirky, fun-loving emo-rockers from California, Hellogoodbye seem to take as much influence from modern pop-punk as they do from the original Nintendo sound bleeps that held children captive in the late '80s. Formed by high-school friends in 2002, the group infused its playful brand of indie power pop with sugary sweetness, catchy dance beats, and enough energy to tire a group of five-year-olds. Hellogoodbye, named after a quote from Saved by the Bell's Screech Powers, is comprised of...
