you gotta feel it

as far as i'm concerned, spoon is pure musical genius. that being said, this single is definitely not their best. i think what makes spoon so special is their ability to develop and evolve while still maintaining their distinctive sound. however some of their recent developments sound a little less creative and a little more formulaic. there's no denying that the each track they put out, including this one, is intelligent and well-composed. but i guess i'm yearning for a little less rhthm and a little more soul.

Raucous Energy Rock

This single has a lot of oomph in it. It's heavy and driving along the feel of Mathematical Mind. That being a favorite track of mine, it makes me excited about the new album. I also heard Britt play a live acoustic show earlier in the year in which he played a couple great songs from this album.

the ga ga ga ga ga and kill the moonlight days? hah

this single continues the tried and true spoon formula, without overplaying its virtues. the razor sharp guitar. the backing piano stabs. britt's raspy, mean bastard vocals (that scream at 2:13 is some bowels of hades scariness). "written in reverse" definitely recalls spoon's most spare moments, but accelerates to full-on melodic peaks in seconds. quite frankly, this is the sexiest band going these days. i'm so excited for transference, and if you're reading this then you probably are, too.

Formed in Austin by singer/guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno, Spoon released its debut EP, Nefarious, on the small Texas imprint Fluffer Records...
