good AND annoying
It's weird that they used three different composers for the three different X-Men films and it's a little disappointing that John Ottman (X2) wasn't available to score the third one despite Singer working on 'Superman Returns' instead. Nevertheless, John Powell does an excellent job making the score exciting and different, while keeping it similar to the previous score and lessening the shock of yet another composer coming into the fold. He doesn't use Ottman's main theme from the second film, but doesn't really seem to use any one theme many times at all. The score is powerful and action-packed, but still emotional. The use of the choir is excellent and gives it a lush sound that the first two scores were without. Unfortunately, the soundtrack has been cut into too many tracks, giving us 27 cues that are rarely more than a minute and a half long. This is particularly annoying because most of the cues run together. If you listen to this score on your iPod, many of the longer pieces of music will thus have breaks in theme. The breaks are distracting and iTunes has no function that will allow you to join together tracks purchased from the music store. Still, it's a good score. If you were a fan of the first two, you should get this one. It's a good addition as well as stand-alone score. Hopefully, it's not the LAST stand.
a REAL review
I noticed there weren't too many reviews about the MUSIC. This soundtrack is odd in ways, because there isn't a whole lot of repetition other than the phoenix theme and title. I would have liked to see more continuity. It is good to hear something that's familiar once in a while, other than the phoenix theme. For me there are far too many slow, eerie parts. Sections that would speed up and begin to get exciting don't stay long enough, and turn into a long winded chord.(boooooring) Its worth buying in my opinion, but is far away from a John Williams score. In response to the fellows who were perturbed that there aren't lyrics, that's pretty dumb. Movies that don't have orchestral music, and rather have crappy pop songs are usually flops. And for the guy who complained about the chorus, come on! Choruses rock! And so does this movie. But don't say the soundtrack is great just because you liked the film. Don't you know who I am? I'm the Juggernaut B**** This soundtrack gets a 3.5-4
a lot of emotion
