Album Review
Old Bombs' Dino Felipe released this EP (in both 12" and CD format) in mid-2002, hot on the tail of his solo debut, Flim Toby. His brand of electronica — part danceable, part experimental — shows the influence of the Mego and Tomlab crews with a lighter touch. Xanaconversex packs nine tracks in under 30 minutes. Most of them don't cross the two-minute duration barrier. Felipe's ideas are concise and well-focused and his grooves are wickedly unstable. "Butterfrii" starts off innocently with a nice pulse and a delicate melody only to disintegrate, first rhythmically and then melodically, as the notes turn into white noise. The closer, "Sexual Boasts (Guitar Floats)," features a post-rock kind of guitar line, taking things into melancholia territory — a surprise since everything else is quite sunny-side up.
