iTunes Review
You might as well tack another X onto the title of the XX's buzz-building debut. After all, it's essentially makeout music for cool kids; steely quiet-storm soundscapes that redefine R&B for a generation that loves Aaliyah and the post-everything productions of Timbaland as much as freshly-pressed Hot Chip singles and faded Cure LPs. Since they're all barely 20, the four South Londoners in the XX are those kind of kids, yet their music speaks to all of us via torch-song tales of love and longing, as chased with smoke ring synths, billowing beats, skeletal basslines, and guitar riffs that ripple more than a pond that's been pounded by rocks. It's addictive stuff, to say the least — a simple but satisfying album that rewards repeat listens and makes for brilliant background music. Not too hard; not too soft … just the XX, doing their thing as the entire blogosphere looks on with baited breath and erratic pulse rates.
Customer Reviews
Appeals to my inner goth
These kids remind me of Joy Division, New Order, The Cure and all the goth/shoegaze bands. Mopey, moody, and very, very talented. But it doesn't sound like a rehash of old sounds, they have their own sonic landscape and it's very powerful. I suppose the people who want to see choreographed dance routines and glitter makeup won't be into the low-key vibe going on here, but that just makes me love them more.
Absolutely Amazing!
I accidentally found this album from the I-tunes features, and I am overly grateful I did! I've never heard music quite like this, it's relaxing yet keeps your interest. To be honest...this album is the perfect music for...love making. The only thing I don't like are the tracks and album are short, and would prefer another 15-30 minutes of music. Regardless, it is still an amazing album and would recommend it to anyone!
For those who gave three stars or lower, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt...
...that you couldn't actually hear all the songs, because your head was tucked in your nether regions. This is the best new band of the year, in my view. Don't hold it against the xx that they don't have a washboard or jug-blower in their ensemble.
