Year of the Black Rainbow serves as a concluding prequel to The Armory Wars, both a comic-book saga and a five-volume conceptual album series birthed by Coheed and Cambria’s frontman Claudio Sanchez. But enthusiasm for the sci-fi workings of Sanchez’s fantastical chronicles is not a prerequisite to enjoying the monolithic music contained within. The instrumental “One” sets the stage with stark eye-of-the-storm atmospheres while tension subtly swells until “The Broken” bursts through the calm with chaotic aplomb as it throws the listener in the middle of an intergalactic battle. Coheed and Cambria narrate this war with dramatic and progressive rock underscored by drummer Chris Pennie’s unpredictable rhythms that approximate cannon blasts one moment and rapid artillery fire the next. The triumphant-sounding “Here We Are Juggernaut” gets anthemic in the ascending chorus as Sanchez’s singing soars skyward to combat the emotions and repercussions of his protagonist’s forbidden love.

This Just Isn't Coheed

This is not the Coheed I’ve come to love. I’ve been a fan since 2002. I absolutely loved every album, except this one. Where’s that melodic, creative style we’ve gotten addicted to? Claudio’s vocals are surprisingly and grossly out of tune on YOTBR. “The Broken” seems to be falling apart at the seams. And “Far,” which everyone seems to love, sounds like any other pop song, with a boy-band sort of melody. There aren’t multiple hooks and creative instrumentals on YOTBR. Each song is almost just Claudio yelling for a few minutes compared to Coheed’s previous albums. I know there are people who agree with me.
There is such thing as too much passion. I think Coheed has jammed too much passion into these songs to the point of sounding indulgent. When the intensity of a song is too high, its musicality suffers. That’s what’s happening to Coheed right now.

its a real toss up

In watching and listening to this band evolve from their first album, second stage turbine blade, to this latest album, I noticed that there sound has became more and more produced, almost like the original coheed is trapt in the confinements of well produced song, bound to the constraints of the label dictating what is okay and what is too much with the producer breathing down there backs ideas about what is good and what is bad. Though this is good, I feel like they are slipping in losing what makes this band unique. It is steadily becoming dare I say, radio rock. Great album, I'm just not sure if im happy with the direction they are heading to. Good Apollos were great but I think it marked the brink of the end for them. I also believe that the new drummer adding to the mix who use to play for the dillinger escape plan also changed the vibe of the music in general. Not a bad album I recommend buying it, just respect that its not the same as it use to be

Whoa... great album Coheed!

For those of you who have said this just "isn't Coheed", I slightly dissagree. It's the same sound that got me addicted to them, but one or two songs have a slight pop twist to them. Over all, YOTBR was such a good album, I'm going to do a song-by-song thing here.

One: 1/10 NO! I would not recomend buying this song alone. This song is all piano and synthesisers. No guitar. No Claudio singing. No drums. The only reason I gave this a 1/10 was because it sounds kind of creepy and moves right into the next song.

The Broken: 9/10 Great song and pretty awesome music video. Chorus is the best part.

Guns of Summer: 10/10 Great opening riff and amazing vocals. Good song. One of the best on the album.

Here We Are Juggernaut: 10/10 Perfect song. So good it sounded like it took them a while to do this song based on it's quality. Good buy. Sounds kind of magnetic.

Far: 6/10 Kind of sounds like pop music. But still. It's Coheed and Cambria. A slow, low key song.

This Shattered Symphony: 10/10 A very dark sounding song from the guitar, singer, and bass. Still, great song, with good lyrics and rythym.

World of Lines: 10/10 Great song. Good job Coheed! This song has a great chorus.

Made Out of Nothing (All That I Am): 8/10 Whoa dude. This is one good slow song by the band. Great guitar and chorus.

Pearl of the Stars: 9/10 This is one slow song. Believe it or not, CLaudio actually talks in a lower voice during the song. This is a very different song.

In the Flame of Error: 7/10 Good mixing of instruments, but not enough effort. This is a decent song.

Where Skeletons Live. 6/10 Umm... not my favorite song. It has a little pop. It's a decent song.

The Black Rainbow: 7/10 Ok... Not the best title song. This is another slow and steady song until about halfway through. Not the best song.
