iTunes Review
The James Gang had its roots in the Woodstock era, and the trio’s 1969 debut forms a bridge between the decades. The trio bears the unmistakable influence of the bands it opened for in the ballrooms around Cleveland and Detroit. A slow-building collision of strings and guitar, “Collage” anticipates the sound Led Zeppelin would turn to in the years to come, while a wooly romp through the Yardbirds’ “Lost Woman” borrows a lot from Cream, especially the soloistic assaults of bassist Tom Kriss. For all their ideas, the Gang’s greatest strength was their ability to rock, even in this early incarnation. A cover of the Buffalo Springfield’s “Bluebird” trades the original’s dreamy atmosphere for a blast of pure guitar, and “Funk #48” is a tasty prelude to its better-known sequel, “Funk #49.” The band was still finding its voice among the legions of shaggy rock groups, but their reading of “Stop” shows why they wowed crowds. Originally a Georgia R&B hit for Howard Tate, the Gang’s version splits the difference between a Macon roadhouse and a Cleveland rubber factory.
Customer Reviews
If they'd only been pretty..
One of the great power trios to come out of the late 60's the James Gang (Joe Walsh, Jim Fox and Dale Peters) first effort (Yer Album) provided soaring guitars, great melodies...and even a bit of humor! Unfortunately for the band...the buying power of 13 year old girls had the labels promoting the Bobby Sherman/David Cassidy's of the era...and true to form (and it continues today)...they bypassed those who actually had talent. No one ever said life was fair, but do yourself a favor, and buy this album...it's great.
Are You a head man?
I got this album while I was in Vietnam. The record groves are worn out now, still have the original! It is played from time to time. I played this every day loudly over over the noise of a 100 kw generator running outside my hootch. This album is a comfort to listen to and should be part of any old "head's collection". Brings back an era, thanks for putting it on itunes.
True Classic
I Love this album. This is absolutely a "musicians album" besides being so ahead of it's time. The studio work can seem a bit dead by todays standards but the arrangements are so interesting. The track called "College" is one of my favorite pretty songs to date and Bluebird and Lost Woman are both fantastic. Stop is kind of a waste in my opinion but all in all I think this is Joe Walsh's finest work. I actually bought this album when it was current and was thrilled to find it here.
