My first Yes LP

I didn't discover Yes until approximately 1977, after falling in love with two Rick Wakeman albums (6 Wives and Journey). When I learned RW played with YES, I hurried over to Licorice Pizza and picked up the hippiest looking cover in their collection of Yes vinyl (the U.S. cover looks different than the above). Little did I know there is no RW until the 4th Yes album, Fragile! I scurried off to a work party and slipped the plastic wrap off, freaking everyone out as this flowery voice and 60s sound came out of the speakers. Definitely NOT party music. Most of the party-goers were stoned or drunk or both, so I kept listening. When the Lennon-McCartney tune "Every Little Think" came on, I was to become a life-long Yes fan. Believe it or not, the next day I was back at the record store purchasing Relayer - again with no RW! OH MY GOD! Within the next few days I had purchased everything Yes that was in stock, and soon afterward, all the solo stuff I could gather. And it all started with this incredible taste of early progressive music by Yes, a masterpiece in its own right. The cover tunes are rich and honest, and the original material hints of the creativity that would come in the next decade. There are even bits and pieces that foreshadow Jon Anderson's light and fluffy sounds that dominate much of his solo career. All the roots are here. Peter Banks is amazing on guitar, Tony Kaye's organ work is great, Bill Bruford's drums are insane!, Chris Squire is already a mature master of the bass, and Jon Anderson begins to discover his voice.

Far and away the longest lasting and the most successful of the '70s progressive rock groups, Yes proved to be one of the lingering success stories from that musical genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock band. Where rivals such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer withered away commercially after the mid-'70s, and Genesis...
