One of Their Best

Among the best of Yes. This album was a strong start to their career, but it is not well recognized, like most albums by Yes (maybe except 90125). If you are Yes fan, this is an important album to have in your collection. Good songs (for me at least) include: Beyond and Before, Every Little Thing (cover of the Beatles' "Every Little Thing" with a few prog rock twists), Survival, Something's Coming, and I See You. Bottom line: if you really enjoy Yes, this is essential to your collection.

The First Yes

The debut of Yes in 1969, this album doesn't have the polish of their best work, but it has some good moments. I See You has a nice jazzy feel to it with an interesting guitar noodling jam. A must-own for any Yes fan, Looking Around is a great track with more than a hint of what would become the classic Yes sound of their 70's heyday. Every Little Thing and Survival are good prog songs that probably would have soared a little higher if long-time Yes guitar virtuoso Steve Howe had been aboard at this point (he joined the band a few years later). The rest...they're OK...maybe better than OK with a good set of headphones. As far as the bonus tracks go, the only one I'm familiar with is Something's Coming (yes...the song from the West Side Story soundtrack), a staple of Yes' early live shows. Not sure if I've heard either of the exact versions here, but I'd put it on the recommended list as well.

It Opened My Eyes

In 1973 I bought an 8-track player from our neighbors, and they threw in this album as part of the deal. Over the years I have found that most people are not aware of Yes by Yes. The music is wonderful--a crude, tasty blend of jazz and rock with rich vocal harmonies and alternate timings that ultimately planted the seed for the progressive classical rock that became their signature. I went on to become a fan of Yes and progressive rock...but this is the album that opened my eyes.

Far and away the longest lasting and the most successful of the '70s progressive rock groups, Yes proved to be one of the lingering success stories from that musical genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock band. Where rivals such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer withered away commercially after the mid-'70s, and Genesis...
