After an EP with the delightful title Now You Know Oh No Ono, Denmark’s Oh No Ono released their first full-length effort, Yes, and it’s a glorious amalgam of pop styles, with the most obvious touchstones being ‘80s synth-pop and the current, otherworldly sounds of bands like MGMT and Panda Bear. Crackling synths and cowbells on tracks like “The Shock of the Real” and “Victim of the Modern Age” clearly nod to the former influences, while a sprawling “Talking Lynndie England” (referencing a certain beleaguered young soldier of infamy) and the lovely “Sunshine and Rain At Once” have a more au courant feel, and seem to reach a little deeper amongst a number of tracks that are all about the dance floor: the frenzied “Keeping Warm In Cold County” and mid-tempo, disco-friendly “Practical Money Skills” are synth-driven movers, with Malthe Fischer’s pinched falsetto both amusing and perfectly suited to the task. This is truly artful pop, and refreshingly original, which in itself is quite a feat.
