iTunes Review

The elegant, opening title track may make it sound like Active Child’s Pat Grossi grew up listening to a-ha’s 1984 debut album, Hunting High and Low. Actually, the New Jersey native's androgynous-sounding vocal style is the result of spending considerable time singing with The Philadelphia Boys Choir. The infusion of '80s-inspired synth-pop comes from his boyhood love for all things New Order, though the standout track “Hanging On” works in some of the era’s R&B and gospel styles to create what Grossi calls “hymntronica.” This is much more pronounced in the soulful “Playing House,” where Brooklyn’s Tom Krell (a.k.a. How to Dress Well) graces the tune with otherworldly vocal gymnastics. While falsettos like Grossi’s are usually reserved for hair-metal bands like The Darkness, here his voice conjures ghostly inflections that give songs like “See Thru Eyes” and “Ivy” the feel and sound of Morten Harket fronting a 4AD band in the early '90s. The deluxe version boasts six bonus tracks, the best of which are the synth-heavy “Call Me Tonight” and the New Romantic-esque “Diamond Heart.”

Opened a gate to heaven on earth

I first heard this music 15 days ago when I saw this band open for M83 at the Mezzanine in San Francisco. Their music seriously stopped me in my whiskey-sipping tracks. I can not emphasize enough how much one should get to a live show of theirs. I was in a weird, sort of apathetic mood and wondered if the show would change that. I couldn't imagine it would. However, the minute the blazing pink stage lights poured down upon us and Pat Grossi began playing the harp and singing like a choir boy all of my drearies immediately disintegrated and I was transported to what felt like heaven on earth. A castle in my mind. Memories of my love for New Wave music as a teenager in the late 80's and visions of mansions in snow and dreams I've had and choirs of angels overcame me. Not joking. This music is magic. I bought a T-shirt and the album and got the single and CAN NOT stop listening to it. The melodies, harmonies, layers of harp and beat and synths and desperately beautiful vocals... WHAT THE? This music has changed my life, for the better, forever. Active Child, I can not thank you enough for your existence. I want to own everything he's ever written. SO AWESOME.

Effing Great!

It's like listening to your life on vinyl smeared with vaseline. Dreamy R&B notes and yearning lyrics. Wonderful use of layering voices to create lovely, haunting moods. I'm all over it.
