Album Review

Capitol's Classic Cocker contains 19 original and re-recorded tracks spanning the raspy-voiced singer's eight-year stint with the label. It should be noted that his late-'60s hits "With a Little Help from My Friends," "The Letter," and "Feeling Alright" aren't the definitive versions heard on Mad Dogs & Englishmen, but later performances taken from the 1990 Joe Cocker Live album (and "Delta Lady" is from 1996). Only "You Are So Beautiful" and his number one 1992 duet with Jennifer Warnes, "Up Where We Belong," are the original charted versions. This isn't to suggest that Classic Cocker is second-rate; his rocking version of Gary Wright's "Love Is Alive" and a relaxed reggae take on the Animals' "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" are recommended, but fans should be aware that this compilation doesn't encapsulate Cocker's Woodstock-era peak.

This is a good compilation of 19 of Cocker's classics and many of them capture the best live performances. Cocker is best in person but if you want to hear him recorded this is the set.

The Anthology is better

Disappointing corporate release. Don't waste your money on this, buy Joe Cocker: The Anthology. The versions (studio and live) are modernized and not as raw and "classic" as those found on The Anthology.
Classic Cocker is missing some of his truly classic songs: Delta Lady, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, Something, and Bye Bye Blackbird. I prefer the "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" version of "The Letter" and the eponymous version of "With a Little Help from My Friends."
Buy "The Anthology" and you'll be treated to truly classic Joe Cocker, one of the best!!

CLASSIC COCKER

Absolutely a super addition to any classic rock collection. I mean the entire album is perfectly arranged and performed by the Master of the 110% live performances. The live version of The Letter and She Came In ThroughThe Bathroom Window are classic and accustically thunderous. Unchain My Heart is my favorite on the entire album, with Joe's rendition of this classic tune being far better than any other could ever do it. You will not find a better 19 songs for 10 bucks than this album.
