Album Review
As Tall as Lions made a late-aughts splash on the indie music scene with a sound characterized by Coldplay-esque melodicism, U2-ish ethereal guitar textures, and the supple, soaring, Jeff Buckley-influenced lead vocals of singer Dan Nigro. On You Can't Take It with You, the Long Island-based group continued in much the same vein as on its 2006 self-titled release, matching the abovementioned sonic palette with kinetic drum'n'bass beats and heaping helpings of old-fashioned rock energy. Sounding at once accessible and inscrutably mysterious, "In Case of Rapture" bristles with a nervous energy that should please emo fans, but remains densely textured enough to appeal to listeners with an ear for the progressive. "Circles" starts out softly melancholy, with a vocal that recalls Art Garfunkel or Elliott Smith before eventually exploding into a guitar freakout underpinned by tense, wiry, claustrophobic rhythms. Throughout, You Can't Take It with You represents the sound of a band striking a delicate balance between emotional directness and artful experimentation.
Customer Reviews
Truly captivating
As Tall As Lions set the bar quite high with their self-titled release and gave us a taste of what was to come in their solid EP “Into The Flood.” To say this was a highly anticipated album would be an understatement – especially after being blown away by their live performance time and again. ATAL delivered … and delivered big. The CD is beautifully written with lush instrumentation, deeply emotive vocals and intricate percussion – all which showcase their tremendous musical ability. From the soaring “Circles,” to the haunting title track, to the intoxicating power of “The Narrows,” just to name a few, the album is truly captivating. While this isn’t a commercial singles-driven musical endeavor, there are solid hooks and infectious rhythms throughout. And just wait until people hear these songs live!! Each of ATAL’s CDs have taken me on a rich musical journey and I love the steps they've taken artistically on this album.
Excellent
It's great to see As Tall As Lions getting the kind of hype they deserve. These musicians have shown true dedication to making songs worth listening to for the past few years. YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU experiments with the professionalism of The Beatles and the artsy, alternative style of bands like Ra Ra Riot and Bon Iver. Songs like "Go Easy'" and "Duermete" feel harmonically bluesy and serene, while "Is This Tomorrow?" and "In Case of Rapture" deluge a rockin' message about the state of our society. The concept of YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU is somewhat self-explanatory, but As Tall As Lions takes ideas of materialism, greed and existentialism to an awesomely deeper level through soulful, intelligent music.
Good Album
As Tall As Lions are back and their newest release is very much what most people I think expected. It builds off the unique sound that first appeared on their self titled release without sounding like a rereleased version of that album. For fans of their original release, while there are moments on the record that remind me of their older stuff, most of the newer songs are pushing further and further away from that sound. Many will agree that this is probably for the better because while their original release wasn't bad at all, it wasn't nearly as unique as what has been released on their newer releases. Their sound has definitely softened but you can still feel the energy especially in songs such as Circles, In Case Of Rapture and The Narrows. All around this is a good effort. It has a very distinct sound and certainly won't disappoint the fans. 4/5
