“It’s just a habit,” Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch sings near the end of the band’s first album in five years. But You in Reverse, however akin its often melancholy vocals and lyrics are to earlier BTS releases, finds the band with a new second guitarist (Jim Roth) and laying down some of its most sprawling, yet focused, studio tracks. The rushing “Goin’ Against Your Mind” lets drummer Scott Plouf take a lead role, while “Conventional Wisdom” pays homage to Television with a towering solo and even some chiming notes that could be straight from “Marquee Moon.” “Mess With Time” fittingly rumbles through a couple of tempo changes, at one point suggesting a kind of spaghetti-Western ska. Whether or not these songs’ sometimes bewildered verbal content reflects Martsch’s mood, their sonic attack gives notice that the man is nowhere near giving in.

My name is Luke and I say YEAH

I'll avoid all of the vapid anguish contemporary reviewers spout off about when they are that trendy guy pretending to be untrendy (pitchfork). This album isn't Melodies, it isn't studio perfect, and it isn't the album the shows 'first album jitters.' It is simply a thank you to the fans who are so ridiculously loyal that they will delete a leaked album simply because they hear that the band is dissappointed. It is an album from a band that puts on unparalleled live shows, an album that avoids lifeless solos. In short, it is the album that we can again listen to and clench our fists in joy while screaming, "YEAH!" in the company of strangers while waiting at the bus stop.

The Best Since "There's Nothing Wrong With Love"

I was going to give this album four stars, since I didn't think it held up to "There's Nothing Wrong With Love". But therein lies the rub, if you will, with BTS. Built to Spill fans are rabid and I am no exception. TNWWL, in my humble opinion, is a classic. It's the alt-world's "Dark Side of the Moon" or "Revolver". It is unfair to compare any album to it, especially one created by the same band well over ten years later. That being said, "You In Reverse" is simply a powerhouse of rock and roll. Its the album Built to Spill SHOULD put out in 2006- well-produced, catchy, and showcasing the entire band, who, by this point, understand each other as well as anybody, I'm sure. "Goin' Against Your Mind" is a great eight-plus minute opener that sets the tone for the album. "Liar" goes back to the lyricism and melodic beauty Doug exhibited on the previous albums. The album's kicker, however, is "Conventional Wisdom", which certainly has to be the song of the year. It encapsulates everything that is powerful about Built to Spill- the crushing, optimistic opening guitar riff, the simple, catchy vocal melody, finally giving way to a swirl of BTS guitar work, the kind of stuff that people pay thirty bucks to hear live and the kind of guitar only a band this talented could pull off. This is a great album. Do not listen to the naysayers, (i.e. Pitchfork, a bunch of snotty 22-year olds, the kind that give Clap Your Hands Say Yeah- a simply awful album- an 8.2 and BTS a 6.8. WTF??). For ten bucks, this simply cannot be beat.

Martsch and co. are back

BTS is one of my all-time favorite bands and has some of the best guitar interplay I've ever heard. Layered staccatos, strumming, harmonics, interlocking time signatures all densely play off each other in fuzzed-out bliss. This album is a strong one and showcases BTS' more "straightforward", yet playful side. Very organic, very loose, lotsa fun and tons of interesting stuff goin' on. You'll think garage, you'll think 70s rock, you'll think Neil Young on the up-and-up. Less pop-and-play, more gritty. Just don't expect the transcendence and cascading guitars of their past. Don't expect this to be a repeat of KILAS (which happens to be my favorite album of theirs and one of my all-time favorites ever). Feels more live and spontaneous with melodies that go for the direct and the quick (minus those wonderful solos). A different change for them -- yea, they still got it.
