Album Review

British soul band Hot Chocolate were known mainly by Americans for their huge 1975 hit "You Sexy Thing." But this 19-song anthology reveals that the band deserves more attention than they received. Lead singer Errol Brown was not only good with catchy dance tunes, but could deliver on romantic ballads, novelty tunes, inspirational material, or even message pieces such as "A Child's Prayer." The group was ahead of its time in other ways, having a racially mixed lineup in an era of increasing polarization, and also including reggae and rock elements in their production and sound.

I bought this album when it first came out way back when and really enjoyed the band's sound. They had two top 40 hits on this album, "You Sexy Thing" and "Confetti Day". Of all the tracks on this album the best was probably "Confetti Day" but don't look for it on this album. It's not there. It was, for some reason, omitted when they cut the CD of the album. Why they would cut one of the most popular songs on the album is a mystery. But that they did. Perhaps they cut it because, at 4:44 it was the longest cut on the album. The rest of the album are all good songs but none that have the appeal of the two top 40 hits. I put the album (I made my own CD from my vinyl album) on and just let it play in the background while I'm working or cleaning up my office. "Confetti Day" and "You Sexy Thing" still get my attention when I hear them even after 25 years. Classics. Too bad many people will never hear "Confetti Day", now, unless it gets airplay (doubtful since nearly all radio stations play from CDs) or they hear it from someone's vinyl collection or they buy it on vinyl themselves.
I'd give it five stars but the omission of one of the best songs from the CD just doesn't merit that fifth star. The music is good and the lyrics aren't bad. Hot Chocolate turned out to be a two hit wonder, though. Enjoy.
