Sveta Bout is one of the most exciting new singer-songwriters of the decade, with a range of musical languages at her command that many artists twice her age are sorely lacking. Imagine if Patsy Cline, Tom Waits, Edith Piaf, and Lady Gaga could get in the same studio together and collaborate. Even better, imagine Jenny Lewis with a (slightly restrained) Gogol Bordello backing her up. That's what you get here in tracks like "Waltz for Kings" and "Oh, These Bones": Bout's strong alto voice rises above inventive arrangements to chastise you gently or half-reveal something. The music, lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation are both playful and honest, the kind of sincerity one hopes for in postmodern pop. Buy this EP, be intrigued, and prepare to be even more blown away by the next one.
