iTunes Review

Tom Petty's second album sans Heartbreakers found him working with Rick Rubin, who produced 1994's Wildflowers. The rootsy and timeless sounding recording remains an earthy and organic contrast to the comparatively overproduced outcome of 1991's Into the Great Wide Open (as mixed by Jeff Lynne). The title track could be Petty's best love song next to "Angel Dream (No. 2)" from the 1996 soundtrack to She's the One and "Time to Move On" sounds like George Harrison covering Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire (without all those synthesizers). "You Don't Know How It Feels" yielded a minor hit and a huge fan favorite — if you've hit one of his concerts since the song surfaced, you know this by the audience sing-alongs on the chorus. The funny lyrics on "It's Good to Be King" beautifully contrast the subtle stings in the chorus and tube-burning guitar solo that is unmistakably Petty's.

If my life were a movie...

I was interviewing and preparing to leave for Cambodia when this album came out. My theme song was Time to Move On. The whole album fit the time and The Traveling Wilburys were also part of this year... for me at least.

Striped down and subtle, but still GREAT...

I heard "You Don't Know How it Feels," on the radio and knew I had to have this CD. It's always a treat when you buy a record for one particular song and then get an entire CD full of fantastic music. Rick Rubin produced this gem and the difference between the Jeff Lynne produced CDs is obvious. This Petty record is striped down and subtle, yet still VERY distinctive. I love it. It's refreshing to hear songs like "Cabin Down Below," and the live favorites "It's Good to Be King," and "You Wreck Me." Petty may be a little more laid back on this record, but his song writing shines even more. The lyrics are clever and and the stories are simple but fun. Wildflowers is one the best Petty records, hands down.

I had heard and liked Tom Petty's music before, but this is the album that made me fall in love with his style and sound. The Wildflowers album is one of very few that I would consider to be the embodiment of folk-rock and is perfect for kicking back on a summer's day.

Upon the release of their first album in the late '70s, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were shoehorned into the punk/new wave movement by some observers who picked up on the tough, vibrant energy of the group's blend of Byrds riffs and Stonesy swagger. In a way, the categorization made sense. Compared...
