Album Review
Brand New is bitter about ex-girlfriends. Just how bitter? The lyrics to just about any song on their debut will give you an inkling, especially "Seventy Times 7," where they grieve: "Have another drink and drive yourself home/I hope there's ice on all the roads/And you can think of me when you forget your seat belt and again when your head goes through the windshield." Aside from all the excessive post-breakup angst, Brand New's emotive pop-punk holds up nicely among the big list of its contemporaries. There are several upbeat anthems with three-part harmonies, though a few ballads break up the high energy. They pay respect to post-punk in "Mix Tape," where they mention the Smiths, while cribbing from the Cure's "Close to Me" in "Logan to Government Center." The repeating refrain of "This isn't high school" in "Last Chance to Lose Your Keys" at least acknowledges that they've grown up, although in the closing singalong "Soco Amaretto Lime" they declare, "I'm gonna stay 18 forever." You'll probably feel 18 listening to this.

OK!
Acually that's not what happened. The lead singer of Brand New was in Taking Back Sunday until the lead singer of Taking Back Sunday slept with the lead singer of Brand New's sister. And that started some trust isues and so they broke up and did their own thing. I asked Adamn from Taking Back Sunday when I met them, cause it drove me nuts. SO yeah!
Quality debut, and they only got better...
YOUR FAVORITE WEAPON is solid and a lot of fun, if formative. For that, it does rank as the least essential album in Brand New's catalog. DEJA ENTENDU, a damn near perfect pop-punk/emo album, is the best place to start if you're a new listener, but all their releases demand attention. What strikes me is the lack of appreciation and enthusiasm expressed on this page for THE DEVIL AND GOD... and DAISY. These are exciting, challenging albums! What the hell, people? This band transcends the limitations of genre formulae to become perhaps the most compelling alternative rock band on the planet, and we shrug our shoulders?! Sad commentary.
Also, get off my lawn!
Good Album
Deja Entendu was no doubt my favorite album by Brand New. I feel like as they released more albums, they became worse, in my opinion. The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is a decent album, but does not hold a candle to their old music, and this new album, Daisy, is the worst by far. I hope they return to writing music the way they used to.
