Featuring their original lineup for the first time since 1997’s Gasolina!, Five Eight sound rejuvenated on their eighth release. Recalling guitar-driven bands from Dinosaur Jr. to the Hold Steady, the album crackles with no-nonsense rock propelled by gritty guitar, pounding drums, and clean, hook-filled arrangements. Known for their emotionally raw lyrics, Your God Is Dead to Me Now is sunnier and funnier than the name suggests, more cathartic release than mopefest. The catchy chorus in the title track is proof of that, as is the slicing slide guitar in “The Ballad of Frankie Jr.” Songwriter and singer Mike Montione has a voice that connects on a gut level as he strains to hit the right notes to express his angst, amusement, or confusion, and the way he deals with serious emotional issues in a head-on way is part of the band’s appeal. They sound vulnerable (“Fire of Love”), swaggering (“Staring Contest”), and unhinged here (“Get Out of My Head”), and also deliver some sharp mid-tempo keepers in “Ode to Massachusetts” and “What Can One Man Change?”

Authentic Presence

There's a term in Tibetan Buddhism, "wangthang," which means "authentic presence," and this band has always possessed it, as this newest work is evidence. It's a source of weird relief these days to witness a clear, uncompromised aesthetic, in anything from film to poetry or visual art, that's honestly operating far past boundaries. Franz Kafka said, about the fate of humanity and the social value of artists, in any medium, is that we're Watchers, most usefully watchers in the deep night. Five-Eight offers stark awarenesses, deep evidences, and wild feelings, often night-feelings, that move from right here to a beyond, as true watchers often will.

Great album and could this be the big one that breaks through??? One of the best I've heard in 2011 & Staring Contest is sick. Stand up 5-8 fans and let everyone know about it. And guys, please don't wait so long for the follow-up.
