Album Review
Empty Sky was followed by Elton John, a more focused and realized record that deservedly became his first hit. John and Bernie Taupin's songwriting had become more immediate and successful; in particular, John's music had become sharper and more diverse, rescuing Taupin's frequently nebulous lyrics. "Take Me to the Pilot" might not make much sense lyrically, but John had the good sense to ground its willfully cryptic words with a catchy blues-based melody. Next to the increased sense of songcraft, the most noticeable change on Elton John is the addition of Paul Buckmaster's grandiose string arrangements. Buckmaster's orchestrations are never subtle, but they never overwhelm the vocalist, nor do they make the songs schmaltzy. Instead, they fit the ambitions of John and Taupin, as the instant standard "Your Song" illustrates. Even with the strings and choirs that dominate the sound of the album, John manages to rock out on a fair share of the record. Though there are a couple of underdeveloped songs, Elton John remains one of his best records. [The CD reissue includes the bonus tracks "Bad Side of the Moon," "Grey Seal," and "Rock n Roll Madonna."]

Agree with everyone on a 5-star
by rshoephotoJust downloaded this album after looking for a few Elton songs and now listening to it on my Ultimate Ears headphones, and have to say (1) totally agree with all the 5-star ratings given, (2) it is really hard to believe this album was cut in 1970, (3) this album has Grey Seal...a great song!!!, and (4) this IS if not the best Elton album certainly right up there!!!
Just great
by end zymeAn exceptional album. Songs like Take Me to the Pilot, Sixty Years on and The King Must Die still hit me like they did when I fist heard them. Just demonstrates the talent of someone who, unfortunately, became something of a stereotype later in his career. Same can be said all of his early records. If you don't have it, check out Tumbleweed Connection. I consider it one of the great records of all time.
WHERE IT ALL STARTED FOR ELTON
by mattal1958Although this was his second album, ELTON JOHN is really his first. It's his MEET THE BEATLES (the Beatles having released an album in England before making it HUGE in the States with MTB). It put Elton on the map. And, it's a GREAT album. Featuring classic Elton songs-- "Your Song," "Take Me To The Pilot," "Border Song,"-- and others that were nearly as good-- "I Need You To Turn To," "First Episode At Hienton"-- Elton shows his softer, ballad side to great effect. The live album that would come out around this time, as well, "11-17-70," featured the OTHER side of Elton-- the wilder, more energetic piano rocker. The combination of both sides would catapult Elton to superstardom, and he really hasn't looked back since. There have been peaks and valleys along the way, but, this album was the starting point of a journey few pop/rock artists have taken since popular music has been around.
