iTunes Review

Released in late 1996, Matchbox Twenty’s debut release Yourself or Someone Like You went on to sell over 12 million copies worldwide, making them one of the most popular rock bands of the late ‘90s. This wide appeal is easy to understand given the band’s emphasis on crunchy guitars, big choruses, memorable riffs and, most significantly, the impassioned vocals of Rob Thomas, the lead singer and principal songwriter. Thomas possesses a powerful voice that easily shifts from silky smooth to aching growl, and more than anything it’s his distinct vocals that give Matchbox Twenty their signature sound. Striking the right balance between studio polish and raw energy, the album is filled with catchy melodies that are easy to sing along with and the hooks to back them up. Most of the songs are up-tempo fist-pumpers, but there are a few slow burners that showcase the band’s softer side as well. Ultimately, Yourself or Someone Like You works well because it’s modeled on the kind of guitar-based classic rock that just doesn’t get old — particularly when it’s done this well.

Greatest album ever?

Maybe not, but its definately one of my favorites. I've listened to this cd at least once a week since I got it in the 90's, and I'm still not tired of it. The album starts off with the catchy Real World where Thomas ponders how different his life would be if he was someone else. Then it moves on to more serious songs like the remorseful Long Day, and a song about his mother (3AM). The album closes with the radio single "Shame",and a deep acoustic track, "Hang". Overall, "Yourself or Someone Like You" is thoughful, introspective and relaxing, but there's enough 90's alt rock in it to keep your toes tapping throughout. I would suggest buying the album in its entireity, but if you could only choose a few tracks, I would recommend Real World, Long Day, 3AM, Kody, and Hang.

One of the greatest albums of All Time

Not a single slip here. Matchbox Twenty's Best by far.

My favorite album of all time

I'm a huge fan of Matchbox Twenty. They've been my favorite band for 10 or 11 years. This CD never gets old to me. I can listen to it over and over. Theres something great about all the tracks. People might only listen to the singles, but there are really good songs mixed within the cd. Argue is a catchy song, that I think people might really relate to. Kody is sad and touching. I believe if you partly like Matchbox Twenty, after listening to this cd you'll love them. I highly recommend this cd. A+

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Upon the release of their debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You, in fall 1996, Matchbox Twenty was pigeonholed as one of the legions of post-grunge guitar bands that roamed the American pop scene in the middle of the '90s. As their first single, "Push," climbed the charts, it was widely assumed (at least by cynical critics) that they were a one-hit wonder, but Yourself or Someone Like You continued to spin off singles well into 1998. By that time, the group's blend of '70s arena rock and early-'90s...
