Album Review

Reuniting in 2007 after a three-year hiatus, Dispatch played a handful of summer gigs in New York City to benefit the crisis-ridden Zimbabwe. Such intentions are creditable, of course, and the fact that Dispatch sold out the monstrous Madison Square Garden — in 30 minutes, no less — is a momentous feat for any independent band. Nevertheless, this CD/DVD package is mostly a "fans only" release, and it doesn't offer much more than the All Points Bulletin release from 2004 (apart from a cover of Bob Marley's "War," which only shows up on the DVD). But Dispatch's audience will certainly eat this up, whether they were one of the 20,000 fans in attendance or not. The crowd participation nearly functions as its own instrument here, especially on songs like "Bang Bang" and "General," where the band is seemingly buoyed by several thousand backup singers. It's the power of this audience — their fandom, their voices, their willingness to travel from several different countries to visit the Garden — that makes such an event possible, and Dispatch: Zimbabwe is essentially a celebration of that support and its charitable extensions. Add to the mix a African children's choir, a Zimbabwean youth choir, and a quartet of talented bongo players, and you've got a genuine Dispatch celebration — not one that outsiders will want to gatecrash, necessarily, but a fun gig nevertheless.

Legendary

I too was at the final show and I can safely say I will never have a better concert experience. The show was one for the ages, setting a record for being the only independent band to fill MSG. The music was fantastic, the band's live performances are usually both beautiful and gritty, and this show is no disappointment. Never have I felt such a universal sense of comraderie with a large group of people, and it radiates through the audio of this set. I am lucky to have been a part of something so historical and my only hope is that anyone buying this CD will be motivated to learn all they can about the crisis the people of Zimbabwe are facing daily

GREAT ALBUM GREAT BAND

This album is a great collection of songs from what went down as one of the most epic live shows that MSG has ever put on. Not only was this an awesome 3 night live performace, but an equally powerfull fundraising effort. This aspect of the show really underrscored the socially minded nature in much of Dispatch music. All in all this is another quality collection of live recordings from Dispatch...

YES!

I was there the last night! Amazing show. We flew from Texas to attend. It was amazing to see thousands of people coming together from all over the world in support of the people of Zimbabwe. We can send a message.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The New England jam band Dispatch was comprised of Brad Corrigan, Pete Heimbold, and Chad Urmston, who first grouped together while attending Middlebury College in Vermont. The young band debuted in 1996 with Silent Steeples and returned a year later with Bang Bang. Both albums displayed the trio's three-part harmonies and cheeky, college-friendly mix of Barenaked Ladies-style acoustic pop and folk-rock, with some reggae and funk influences tossed in for good measure. June 2000 saw the issue of Four-Day...
