iTunes Review

Missouri’s Bottle Rockets continue their work as one of America’s most songful bar bands on Zoysia. Eight releases into their career, Brian Henneman and fellows put their Neil Young-inspired rock to use on a slightly less biting, Midwest-based version of what the Drive-By Truckers do. Not to say that there’s no snarl here. “I Quit” warns that even a newly minted non-drinker shouldn’t be toyed with, while “Happy Anniversary” puts a classic country spin on the long-playing misery that friendship with an ex-lover can veil. The rowdy, sexy “Mountain to Climb” and the post-split-up “Better Than Broken” are catchy enough to qualify as hit singles – if the Rockets were the sort of outfit that scored them these days. A couple of message songs fail to pierce their targets, but the title track makes up for them. It pooh-poohs red state/blue state divisions by bringing the talk down to Henneman and his next-door neighbor, who disagree politically but “get along fine.”

Guitars to Mow You Down

You can hear the Horse on this one...the Crazy Horse that is. The Bottle Rockets, lead by Brian Henneman, draw on such vintage luminaries to make this album the best they have ever done. It shows rare maturity and craftsmanship that will hold up for years. There are upbeat rockers like Better than Broken, Suffering Servant and Mountain to Climb that just want to be played live, and then there are album rock classics like Zoysia and Happy Anniversary that will want to spin all weekend long.

Impressive

Being tagged as one of the "finest bar bands" is a nice compliment but that label always seems to generate gut reactions that a bar band isn't as solid or serious about their craft. That label should bother the B-Rox as well, for their level of talent and skill as musicians/songwriters make them so much more than just a "bar band." Zoysia firmly quells the unfair attribution. Henneman's songwriting is simply unstoppable here and two new band members really shine. With each album, the B-Rox get closer and closer to becoming the Norman Rockwell of rock: from afar, seemingly simple songs and lyrics. Upon closer look, though, it becomes complicated, cynical and sharply intelligent. The lyrics on Happy Anniversary are Henneman's best, the story told on the phenomenal title track makes you stop and think about HUMANS and when the left hook of "Mountain To Climb" staggers you, you'll quickly realize it: there is way more to this band than anyone thinks. Get it.

Put on Repeat, and Turn it Up

The Pride of Festus, MO is back with their finest studio work in years...from the outstanding opening track "Better than Broken" to the title song that closes out the album, it is as fine a listen as you can get for your $9.99. Call it Rock, call it Country, Call it Americana, Call it Alt-Country...just give the BRox an hour-plus of your time on Zoysia and you'll be hooked.

Biography

Formed: 1992 in Festus, MO

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Festus, Missouri's Bottle Rockets ranked as one of the leading lights of the 1990s roots rock revival, thanks to a sound that bypassed the punk heritage proudly upheld by most of the band's contemporaries in favor of a redneck fusion of Southern boogie, country-folk, and crunching rock & roll. The group was fronted by singer/guitarist Brian Henneman, a Missouri native who formed his first band, Waylon Van Halen & the Ernest Tubbadours, in 1977 with friends Tom and Bob Parr. After a succession...
