Description
Ever wish you had an extra display for your Mac or Windows computer? There's an app for that! With Air Display, you can use your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch as a wireless display, to extend your computer desktop. Developed by Avatron Software, home of the popular Air Sharing apps, Air Display lets you position your iOS device next to your computer, drag windows onto it, and interact with those windows as you would on any other computer display.

Air Display's performance is extremely responsive, employing a unique dynamic compression algorithm. On a typical Wi-Fi network, mouse cursor refreshes are indistinguishable from a wired mouse.
Air Display works in both landscape and portrait configurations. Just rotate your screen, and it automatically reconfigures.
Air Display makes a laptop much more useful. Adding the iPad's 1024x768 display nearly doubles the screen area of a laptop or netbook.
Air Display not only gives you a wireless computer screen extender, but also works as a tablet input device. You can use your finger to draw directly on the screen's surface. Try it with a calculator app, painting tool, or music control surface!

MAC OS X
Air Display requires 10.5.8 (Leopard) or 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or later, on an Intel CPU. Both 32-Bit & 64-Bit systems are supported. Users of new MacBook Pros with dual graphics hardware should disable Automatic Graphics Switching when using any virtual frame buffer (including Air Display). The Air Display installer will configure that for you.
WINDOWS
Air Display requires Windows XP (32-bit only), or Vista or 7 (32-bit or 64-bit). Windows 7 Starter edition is not supported.
NETWORK
In order for Air Display to work your computer and iOS device must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Please note that this version does not shrink the computer pixels down to native-sized Retina pixels. This may change in a future update.

Love it for Photoshop
This app is so easy to use. Typically these sort of apps are tedious to be useful. This one just works so nicely. It is always in your tray and ready to pop open.
It is kind of slow for video and what not but, it is perfect to keep your photo shop toolbars in.
One feature that would be really cool is to be able to have your curser snap back to your main screen after selecting an item.
Using iPad as a 3rd display monitor
At first this app didn't work for me. In fact, when i first installed the desktop preference pane on my Macbook Pro running OSX 10.5.8 the menu bar disappeared which freaked me out.
After emailing the developers, their support team contacted me back in a little less than an hour, giving me instructions on getting the app to work right with my system.
Now I say that this app works. It's a bit slow when you're dragging new application windows into the display area, but it is great for chat windows such AIM buddy lists and conversations.
Also good if want to drag a window to the iPad screen for more privacy, when logging into bank account websites, etc.
Second Screen for only $10; fantastic deal
When I read the Gadget Lab list of the top 10 iPad apps that would "blow you away", I read it with a certain degree of suspicion...I am not a geek-a-zoid (at least I don't think so). I bought Air Display based on the description at Gadget Lab and the detailed level of info at the app site. WOW WOW WOW. I am a Photoshop teacher and heavy heavy user. I now have all my working pallets off-loaded onto my iPad...and I can select them with a finger, not a mouse (although the mouse works good too.) Its better if you keep your iPad in the portrait mode (landscape puts a grey column to the right). Just select a pallet and move it off the screen TO YOUR RIGHT...after you properly set up the app...which is easy. If I can do it, anyone can!
Well worth the $10. If you have an iPad and use Photoshop, this is a MUST HAVE APP. It is everything it represents itself to be.
