Description

★ A Critical Guide by Edward Keegan ★

Chicago is that rare American city that draws visitors just to see its architecture. Famous designers like Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Daniel Burnham, and Mies van der Rohe made the city known as the Birthplace of Modern Architecture. Contemporary stars like Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, and Renzo Piano have left their mark as well.

This "critical guide" steers you to dozens of the city's landmarks and hidden jewels with the outspoken commentary of Edward Keegan, an award-winning observer and participant in the local scene for a quarter century. Whether you're looking for directions around town to the major sites or just scrolling to add to your knowledge of this city's seminal designs, "Chicago Architecture: A Critical Guide by Edward Keegan" will instruct and entertain.

Customer Reviews

Wow! Dig it!

The review by sad is the result of some serious confusion. He's thinking of Geoffrey Baer! Geoffrey Baer is also very cool, but not the same person.

Edward Keegan is an architect who has been writing about architecture for more than 20 years and has a couple of books on Chicago architecture. But he's not the guy with the PBS show.

As for the app, I really dig it.

Anytime I've got a little down time particularly in the loop, one touch of the map button gives me a quick list of what's nearby. Suddenly going to the dentist doesn't seem quite so bad. I get to treat myself to a little mini-tour of my own making. I can check out the background text and then have a closer look at buildings I would have to pass anyway.

When out-of-town guests come, they understandably want the architectural low down. This helps me seem way cool. I've used it to point out important buildings and answer questions in record time. The descriptions aren't academic treatises but they're way meatier than I've found in any Chicago guide kind of apps.

Love this app!

I found this app extremely informative and fun to use!

Sad

I bought this app after watching the Edward Keegan documentary on PBS about the same topic- this app has absolutely nothing to do with that! There are several things noticeably missing from an app that is $2.99: 1. No tour information. You have to go through and find buildings that are of interest to you either on a map or from a list. Nothing like a set "tour" is offered. 2. The information about the buildings is child-like. There is no in depth explanation of anything here. Typical descriptions of buildings include "ahead of its time" and "intricate artwork" what!?! It doesn't say when they buildings were built or what they were and are used for. The FREE TRIP ADVISOR APP IS MUCH BETTER!
