Random volume=blown speakers

The last update seemed to correct the issue with not finding the receiver for 30 seconds. However, now it is basically unusable unless you are okay with blowing out your speakers. I have two zones, and when I want one zone on and not the second, the volume often maxes out on the zone I don’t want on at all when I turn on the the second zone. And it takes a few seconds of panic to get it shut back off. This happens even if I have the other zone muted. The mute turns off and cranks the volume to 70+. It doesn’t always happen, guessing 1/4 of the time. Complete garbage, and if you’ve spent some money on good speakers you’re really taking a risk by using this app. And before anyone asks, the super high random volume is not a “feature” (ie remembering the last volume setting for that zone), because it gets cranked to more than double of the loudest I’ve ever played music. It didn’t do this the first 4-5 years I used the app.

It’s good when it works

Here are the issues.

1) The connection between the receiver and the app on deeper applications very occasionally goes to sleep. (Pandora/Spotify for example) Switching between screens on the app can wake up the connection, but if you are still seeing issues, unplug the receiver and boot it back up. A pain? Of course. But I suspect the receiver software is more to blame than this app.

2) Denon’s software on the receivers is flakey. When the app is completely unresponsive, crashing, etc., it can usually be fixed by unplugging the receiver, giving it a minute to think about its’ naughtiness and plugging it back in.

Just how quirky is the Denon OS? I had to reset the unit and setup my surround system all over again after accidentally signing out of an audio streaming service.

3) The app UX could improve, but now that I’ve learned it, things are better. I only just learned I can customize the buttons on the app. So yes, for the uninitiated, it’s not immediately user friendly to use. (Hey Denon! You could change this.)

After understanding the OS issues on the receiver, my relationship with my app and receiver has been elevated to an understanding of its quirks, and a we now have a mostly productive relationship.

Stopped working mysteriously

App worked fine before the latest update. Now, the app attempts to open, then force quits to the home screen of my up to day iPhone XS. Puzzlingly, the app shows as active as a background process, showing up as expected when app switching. When attempting to switch to it however, it will disappear.

Attempted an uninstall/reboot/reinstall and upon successfully opening the app, it won’t detect my networked and static IP’d receiver. Pitiful and sad.
Used to be mostly functional, if a little slow, but it’s 2019 now and customers EXPECT correctly implemented integration with their devices. There’s simply no excuse for this. That’s what you get with a third party dev, I suppose. Denon needs to step this app thing up as the world is moving quickly toward app integration rather than juggling remotes for functionality.
