Description
Have you ever wondered how the alphabet first appeared in the ancient near east, or wanted to get some idea just what pieces of early alphabetic writing have been found? This app will show you those things and more. Most of the various recognised examples of early writing are shown on a combined map and timeline – get a quick overview of the big picture, or zoom in and find out more about individual finds. Many of the items are linked to online images or web pages describing them in more detail. New fragments are emerging in archaeological digs year by year, and this app will track such developments as they come to light.

Not what I expected
I teach about the Phoenicians and was hoping to have a section on the app that compared different images of the ancient alphabets that the students could manipulate. Instead, there are a bunch of overlapping dots that make it difficult to tap on the area you want to explore. Also, there are far too few images and too many labeled cuneiform that are not. This would be better if there were a comparison between the hieroglyphs, Phoenician alphabet, cuneiform, and the Israelites since they were all in the region the map covers. Also, the map expands to Greece, but does not have any dots appear.
