Good but...
I've been using the TapTrace app to locate my iphone/ipad for a while and really like it but thought Find my iPhone would be better -- it's from Apple after all. The answer is YES and NO! The ability to remote lock and wipe is an awesome feature (if a thief hasn't beaten you to it and wiped the device). You can't beat free, but unfortunately it's not free. A Mobile Me subscription is required?! Thanks, but not thanks. Not worth the subscription price when there's lots of free alternatives available for online storage etc. Apple should go back to free signup for Mobile Me. In the meantime, if I want to find my iphone, I'll make do with TapTrace.
FMi Saved me a few $$$
I'm so happy there's a dedicated app now. A few months ago, my girlfriend and I went out to dinner and when she came home she couldn't find her new iPhone. We did what everyone normally does when they lose a phone, call it. Only thing is that we didn't hear it anywhere in the house. I remembered we previously set up MobileMe on her phone so went online to Find My iPhone. It turned out the phone was nowhere near the house, it was still at the Restaurant! I sent it a message, "Help return me to my owner, call..." The manager got a hold of the phone, called me as I was on my way back to the restaurant and held it in the office. I know there's a yearly fee for Mobile Me, but you can get a $30 discount on your membership if you buy it at the same time with your iPhone, Mac or iPad. It even works for renewals. You get a lot more than just this with Mobile Me. For me personally, not having to buy a phone on an early upgrade to replace a lost one pays for mobile me for the next few years. Now Find My iPhone is faster and easier to use as a dedicated app. If someone wasn't nice enough to call back we could now follow and track the phone without a cumbersome laptop with some cellular internet data card. Totally worth it!
This info should be up top without haveing to click more...
