Foreflight—Not ready to be my primary method of navigation for IFR

I’m a commercial (almost ATP) pilot with a jet rating. I’ve used Jeppesen software for almost 10 years. I’ve used Seattle Avionics Voyager for over 5 years. I’ve used tablets, laptops, iPhones and iPad (iPad 2 64gb Verizon) in the cockpit. I’ve used Foreflight for 13 months. I embrace technology in the cockpit.

Based upon my flying experience with Foreflight, I will not use Foreflight alone in the cockpit as my primary method of IFR charts or navigation without another iPad flight app running and ready to use as an immediate backup and paper charts at my immediate disposal.

I have had only 1 flight in the last 6 where Foreflight has not crashed during an instrument procedure. For 5 of my 6 last IFR flights, Foreflight, without any warning or input on my part, has crashed during an IFR approach or transition to an approach. I’ve lost the app on final, on procedure turn, on the DME arc, and STAR. The app goes from showing a geo-referenced plate to completely crashing the app and taking me to the iPad homescreen. This is the only app I have that experiences this trouble. No other nav application—EFB, Tom Tom, Maps--has this issue.

I’ve used Foreflight support and received no substantive help. They give immediate email response, but no support. Apple support says it’s Foreflight. Foreflight says that Foreflight might be addressing a part of my Ipad’s memory that other programs don’t.

Until you’ve personally tested this for many flights, use Foreflight as a program that needs to prove that it’s stable. An EFB app MUST be stable during an IFR approach or else its worse than useless, it’s dangerous.

Best flight tool since GPS-Hello 21st century!

As I am now in my 35th year of flying (including the USAF), this utility makes me feel as if I've reached the 21st century! Of course I will keep some emergency paper approach plates but for all practical purposes, I now have an almost paperless cockpit. I think I will always have a paper checklist as this is about the only thing this program does not have. In fact, if the developer reads this, please add a Beechcraft A-36 checklist with emergency procedures & POH to this & it will then be perfect. I never wanted an iPad because I had no need for it but when the Stratus came out to work with this program with no XM subscription, I had to have it. Goodbye storm scope! I am looking forward to many hours of flying without having to guess about real time Wx.

Great App

Ditto to all the above. For checklists: I had a paper checklist I printed from a MSWord document for my G35 Bonanza. When I got the iPad, I "published" the checklist as a PDF file using MSWord then emailed the PDF file to myself. When I downloaded the file, I selected "open with Foreflight" and it saved the document in Foreflight. As I let down, I have the approach plate under the "plates" tab, the map under the "map" tab, the destination info under the "airport" tab and my checklist under the "documents" tab. Slick and easy to use. I'm saving my pennies for the ADS-B reciever.
