Great app! I use it when I travel to Costa Rica (and everywhere)!
This app is awesome. I keep it in a folder in my dock so it's never more than two clicks away! It's a super duper digital map (that will keep track of where you have been). It is NOT a GPS.
PLEASE NOTE: Most bad reviews are due to people NOT reading the description. This program does what it is supposed to quite well.
This app has two ways to do maps:
a) For free: You know you're going somewhere without cell service so you (while you're on WiFI or have phone service and while plugged in to power) click on all the maps you want and zooming in at different levels. Then when you're off-line (no phone service) you can view all those maps. It's that easy.
b) For $1.99, you can use the off-line map generator to generate maps and it gets them at all the zoom levels you specify. You can generate as many as you want and only install the ones you want. Then when somewhere with bad service I don't have to wait for maps to load or when traveling, I don't need to use cell service. Downloading the maps over the cell service takes time and uses battery.
c) There are tracks (breadcrumbs) and bookmarks too. I rarely use the tracks but I use the bookmarks all the time.
I use this in Costa Rica (I live in the US) and put my maps of the area where I spend the most time. I've got a hiking GPS, but when just out and about, this is nice. Even though my iPhone photos get GPS tagged, sometimes I'll use this to do a screen capture so I've got a map next to the photo or video I just took.
I also keep maps of the area where I live in Michigan, for biking walking or whatever. They're already there if I need them (less power and time than using the cell network).
I've purchased the option to put my own maps on and never had to repurchase them. Maybe with a new phone I had to go through the act of repurchasing it to reactivate it, but I was NOT charged again! my
FYI - You can tell if any application has in-app purchase by looking on the left side of the iTunes app description screen. It's not a huge secret. And he has a warning that you must have iOS 4 and pay the $1.99 for the option to import maps.
Lots of complainers (and low ratings) that because the app doesn't do what they think it'll do, read the people who give great reviews to find out what is does do.
The author has his e-mail address and a support forum listed above. He has responded to several of my e-mails in the past.
No way to download?
I purchased the full app and still can't find a way to download a full map.
Didn't work for me
Zoom take too long to correct.
