Customer Reviews
Buggy - no landscape?
These reviewers giving this 5 stars and glowing compliments obviously had a hand in this app or a vested interest in the site. I love gear patrol but this app is buggy, hard to use, and doesn't support landscape mode. This was clearly rushed out and not tested with any kind of focus group. I will be back after a few updates, I'm sure this app will be as awesome as the site, eventually!
One Serious Magazine
This app is 100% pure win. There's a few random quirks here and there, but it totally crushes reading gear patrol on their website. Huge images are worth downloading it alone. It would be nice to see a landscape view, but I never end up holding my iPad that way anyway. Also, it's nice to finally see someone realize that reading columns of text side by side is totally old school -- NOT on the iPad, thank you for making it read like instapaper where I can keep scrolling until I'm done!
Also a heads-up for first timers, the first image on the 'cover' seems to take a few extra seconds to load. I tried it in both my iPads and noticed that. Otherwise, those are some killer photos, seriously! So much bigger than the website too, love it!
Blog to Magazine
Many have written about the consequences of the iPad for print content (say, Wired or the New York Times). The Gear Patrol app raises the question about what will happen when web content comes to the iPad. My own feeling is that with this app Gear Patrol appears to go from blog to magazine. When I looked at this app, I felt like I had a glossy magazine in my hands rather than a blog in front of my eyes. Does this signal that the Gear Patrol folks will start to produce longer, in-depth, content or thought pieces or other content more commonly associated with magazines than with blogs? Or is the apparent magazinification of the blog an accident? It will be very interesting to see whether and how the new format matters for content as Gear Patrol matures.
A few annoyances remain: missing pixels in the word "More" at the bottom of the page, slow loading of video content [perhaps the fault of my own network or Vimeo]. Yet, my experience with with even this initial release of this app did not really suffer from these problems. (Seems like a review for an initial release of this kind should be 4.5 rather than 5 so that one can rate improvements more highly as they occur.)
