This latest version of iBird is now compatible with the new iOS 5 and comes with a host of exciting new features which take it ever further beyond all current birding apps. I'd like to tell you about just a few of the things we did to improve iBird.

■ UNIVERSAL APP Most importantly iBird is now an official "universal" app meaning it works beautifully on the iPad tablet, filling the entire screen.

■ SPECTROGRAM We developed a special player control to bring a deeper insight to the inner structure of bird songs by allowing you to view the sounds frequency domain.

■ PHOTO SLIDESHOW We added a photo slideshow to iBird which displays all 2,800 photos randomly while playing their song or call in the background.

Standard Features:

■ Parameter driven search lets you identify birds quickly, so you spend more time observing and less time reading.
■ Search by shape, size, habitat, color, family, song, length, weight, flight pattern wingspan, and much more.
■ Taxonomic and Alphabetical Family sort options on Browse screen.
■ Hand-drawn full sized color illustrations, with perching and flight views.
■ Multiple professional photographs for each species showing plumages, sexes and seasons.
■ Multiple professionally recorded bird calls and songs for almost every species.
■ Shake your device while on a species page to automatically select a new species and play a random bird song.
■ Extensive identification, behavior, and habitat information.

As a standalone iPhone app, iBird does not require an Internet connection for access to the rich media information in its database. This does mean that the application is large, so please be patient when downloading from the iTunes app store.

Not bad but could be better

The app has potential but the creator's seem to put a premium on cosmetic changes. The makers can be abysmally slow in correcting the captioning for mis-identified photos and the taxonomy and nomenclature (names) on the update released on 12/21/2011 is at least 5-12 months out of date.

Excellent

Great app (still prefer my guide books) Wish it had a short index for groups of birds like "diving ducks" or "shorebirds"

Great birding app

I use this app to study for a birding trip and use it on the field to identify birds. The information and photos are excellent and I like the ability to add my life birds to my favorites list.
