Customer Reviews
Don't waste your time/$$ if you want this app so you can bring your grocery list to the store.
Let me preface this by saying that I have MacGourmet Deluxe on my Mac, and I LOVE it. I import all the interesting recipes from my various cooking magazines into the app, use the meal planning feature, and set my laptop in the kitchen when it's time to make dinner.
Back to the meal planning feature...I have to travel ~1.5hrs to do my main grocery shopping; since I work full-time and also have small children, I rely heavily on the meal planning / grocery list functionality of the app to save valuable time.
When I first bought my iphone I was thrilled to discover that MacGourmet had an app for the iphone (previously I was manually dictating my grocery list into a droid, which was a miserable process). I read the customer ratings for the previous version, and decided to wait until the new version was released before purchasing the iphone app.
As soon as the new MacGourmet iphone app was released, I jumped on it happily (assuming, of course, the app would be useful). Since day 1 I have been unable to do the absolute simplest thing - SYNC the grocery list wirelessly.
I contacted the developer, who told me the issue was a known problem and would be fixed in the next release.
Well, the update came and went, and guess what? It still doesn't work. I am not computer illiterate, and can confirm my Mac shows a connection with the iphone (and vice versa); even the MacGourmet apps on both the Mac and iphone confirm they are connected. The sync used to give a timeout error message, but now it just hangs and doesn't do anything when I try to sync the grocery list. Mind you, I tried just having ONE grocery list in MacGourmet on my computer in case the app was just too confused to be able to handle syncing more than one...but apparently it can't even handle the one list.
I'd rate this app 0 stars if I could, because at this point it is completely useless to me. For those who may want it for syncing their recipes to read off their iphone/ipad in the kitchen, I cannot speak to that functionality as the only reason I need the iphone app is for the ephemeral menu planning / grocery list integration. For now I guess I have to be content with either printing my grocery list (which I refuse to do) or manually entering everything into the Shopping List app I had to download as a workaround.
Bottom line: Don't waste your time or money if you want to be able to sync grocery lists until reviewers confirm the developer has fixed the issue.
Lists still don't work with wireless syncing
Current version: Lists do not work with wireless syncing, although they do work with the tedious manual sync.
Can we get the wireless syncing for the ipad app also please.
My original review of the previous version:
I love this app, makes it so easy to sync my recipes with my desktop version of macgourmet so I always have them with me when I'm shopping. I have no excuse to forget an ingredient I need. Very convenient. I love the wireless syncing which is very fast and easy. I can't wait for the ipad app.
Won't WiFi Sync again
I just read a review where the reviewer was happy that he is now able to sync wirelessly, since through iTunes never worked for him. I have experienced just the opposite. I was able to sync through iTunes just fine (though it's a pain in the rear, especially if you are adding new recipes frequently). Then they released 2.1 and it synced great over WiFi. When this version was released, I thought why update since it is only a fix for people having problems with WiFi syncing? I wasn't having any problems, but I updated anyway thinking it is probably best to have the latest and greatest. Wrong! WiFi syncing no longer works. It starts to sync and then hangs on the same recipe every time. If I uncheck recipes, the shopping lists, wine notes and cooking notes sync just fine. I can however, sync through itunes as before, but hate that. How can I return to 2.1?
