A first person shooter done right.
I grew up as a young gamer, and my parents hated it.
"Come and clean the kitchen."
"I can't mom, I have to save the princess."
"She's been waiting forever, can wait a little while longer."
I had to lie to them to tell them what I was doing. That is, until my dad let me play Wolfenstein 3D on his computer.
"Come and help take in groceries."
"Sorry mom, I'm singlehandedly undermining the Nazi empire."
No objections were ever said. This was the first true Nazi killer. It wasn't Call of Duty or Modern Warfare. It's Wolfenstein.
In all seriousness, this port of Wolfenstein 3D is smooth, clean, uses little energy, and is fun as hell for the price you're paying for it.
Usually when iPhone games say "60 levels" they're talking about simple level designs. Not Wolfenstein 3D. Wolfenstein 3D is full of intricate mazes and secrets. You won't complete a level the first time in under 10 minutes. If you want all the secrets and medals, you'd probably spend around 20 minutes per level. That's a legitimate 15-20 hours of gameplay right there, which is more to be said than some $50 titles that you can buy today.
Wolfenstein was never about the graphics. It's about carnage. The level designs abut fairly simple, but the are oh so satisfying. E nostalgia factor of this game kept you on the edge. You were always in the zone.
The iPad version of this game isn't perfect though, but these are three minor complaints.
The first is that the sound isn't as good as it was on the old PC version. In the old days, when you shot someone, they screamed. Their voices were deep and menacing, and the deep thump of the music just got your heart racing. "Is there an enemy in this next room? OH FU-"
The second is that the controls are a little stiff, even after perfecting your controls. However, this is a common complaint with a lot of games that do not rely on basic gestures and tilt control in their gameplay.
The third is that some of the textures look childish. This game used to be dark, gloomy, and epic. Where the awesome textures? What I'm seeing is fine, but a lot of it looks cartoony. I want my dark Wolfenstein back!
However, Wolfenstein is still the greatest controlled FPS I've seen on the iPad thus far, and the game has stood the test of time. Thank you for bringing my childhood back id. Thanks for letting me rip the Nazi empire a new a--hole.

Finally! The save game bug is fixed, and the game is perfect once again. Two thumbs up for the 'classic' difficulty select logos too. Nice touch.
Still Classic
Quite possibly one of the best bargains in the app store for the amount of content included. The only problem I have with it is I can't play it for too long because the flow of the levels makes me motion sick.
