Description

2010 Macworld Utility of the Year. Type faster on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using short abbreviations that expand into long snippets.

With TextExpander touch, you create a library of abbreviation shortcuts for snippets of text that you use frequently, such as addresses, URLs, and standard replies. Tap that abbreviation, and it automatically expands to the full snippet. (You can even insert today's date automatically with the default abbreviation "ddate"!) New: Sync your snippets with Dropbox!

You can use your TextExpander touch snippets directly in over 100 apps that support it, including Twittelator, TwitBird Pro, Elements, Simplenote, WriteRoom, Circus Ponies NoteBook, DEVONthink To Go, BusyToDo, Things, and Zendesk. See www.smilesoftware.com/applist for a complete list.

Given the current feature set of the iOS, TextExpander touch cannot work in the background (as it does in Mac OS X), expanding text snippets while you work in another app, unless that app supports TextExpander touch.

Compose new email messages in TextExpander touch, using your snippet library of boilerplate paragraphs, email addresses, URLs and signatures. Automatically insert the message into an email in Mail or copy it for use in other apps.

If you use TextExpander on the Mac, you can also share the snippet groups with iOS devices over your local network.

"If you do a lot of writing and communication on your iPhone, TextExpander is practically required for efficiency." - iPhone AppStorm

Works good, but only works in a few apps

After trying TextExpander on the Mac, I bought this without reading the description as the desktop version works so well. Unfortunately, there are only a hundred or so apps that are compatible. I only use one of the apps that are compatible. Mail and messages is where I would use this a lot but these are not not supported. A workaround is to copy and paste but that doesn't take a five dollar app. Sorry I bought it now.

Why you should buy TextExpander despite the iOS 5 shortcuts

The people who say "But didn't Apple include shortcuts in iOS 5?" must have very simple lives. The Apple shortcut interface, well, I'm not supposed to use profanity, but insert one here that means "is really bad."

OTOH, with TextExpander you can:
- sort your snippets into folders
- edit them on your desktop via Dropbox
- sync them to other iOS devices via Dropbox

It's true that TE "only" works with a hundred or so apps, but that list includes most of my go-to apps. If you have an app that you'd like to support TextExpander, then just take 30 seconds to write the developers and ask them to support TextExpander.

Integration is great; App is buggy and unusable

Having my snippets in Simplenote and DayOne and other places is amazing and awesome. But the app itself is a crashing, buggy disaster. Can't get more than one or two taps into the interface 90% of the time before it freezes or crashes outright.

Fix it, and you have an easy 5-star app!
