Spanish Conversation - Fun Tool
Spanish Conversation Application for the iPhone is an application that costs $3.99 in the Apple App store. It has 20 audio visual lessons based on real Spanish conversations. The Spanish used in these dialogs is more from Spain than Latin America but it all useful none the less. The target audience for this application is someone who has had some Spanish and reasonable handle on basic constructs of the language. Each of the two lessons take the student through various life situations of young college / post college students and introduces vocabulary, phrases and uses in these situations.
What you will get with this application is a very nicely integrated app to add to your understanding of the language in real life situations (often missing in many formal books). Also, keep in mind this only costs $3.99. Consider what you would pay for other products on the market (much more). Also, don't expect this to be a comprehensive study of the language with extensive coverage of grammar. Rather this app does a very good job at what it set out to do. Educate the student to the next level with a nice handle on the basics. And as well even for the more advanced student there may be some good vocabulary to be heard or added. Not, recommended for the beginning student. In conclusion this App does a good job at what it sets out to do and it is fun and straightforward.
Each lesson consists of the following; a vocabulary introduction, a video / audio dialog with the dialog notes, a listening comprehension test, story order quiz, matching definitions with new vocabulary words, multiple choice vocabulary questions, fill in the blank phrases from the vocabulary and finally a review of vocabulary if needed.
The vocabulary section introduces the new words or phrases (as well the student can mark each word as known, maybe or no). The word or phrase has a recording of a native speaker saying it and a flash card to flip over for the definition. Going through this vocabulary prepares someone of the upcoming audio video dialog.
The audio video dialog comes in two parts. The first is a cartoon like animation of the situation with the audio in synch with the video. Note, at this point it is highly recommended to have a high speed network (WIFI) connection as the every dialog must be downloaded and of course I don't recommend downloaded this over your telephone carriers' network . The other part has the text of the dialog written out and the option to play the audio and see each part. The text part of the dialog is nicely integrated with the previous vocabulary drill and the student can review each definition as the see the written text (good feature). Depending on one's level in the language (more advanced) listen to the audio / video first without the written text or less advanced, look at the text then play the audio. Both can serve the student well.
The first exercise to reinforce the experience is a test to put the phrases of the dialog in order. For myself this was the exercise I like the least. But that is just my own personal opinion.
The next one is "Matching" vocabulary with the definitions. Again this serves as a useful review of what you have just read then heard. The next mode is a multiple choice test of the dialog. In the matching the student has to select the correct usage of the new vocabulary from multiple choice options. After these two is the "fill in the blanks" section which requires the student to spell out the correct usage of each newly learned phrase of word. The final section is the "Word Bank Review" which exactly the same as the vocabulary flash cards in the first section of the audio/video lesson.
The application is well designed and integrated. As stated earlier it doesn't attempt to do more than necessary, but rather does a good job with its approach. I think it would be a good addition for anyone at the target audience level. Since its focus is one speaking and understanding there isn't much discussion about grammar usage or highlighting its usage for the students. Perhaps some light treatment of this would be helpful for students who need some of these subjects firmed up or pointed out.
The audio is clear and at a moderate pace (perhaps slowly than "real time" in the streets) yet I believe this is just about right speed for those who are learning and improving their audio comprehension.
Bugs in the software; my iPhone 3GS (with the latest software) is almost full with songs, videos, photos and applications. I didn't notice at some point some of the vocabulary flashcards didn't properly show the definition of a word of phrase (this happened from the dialog portion of the text, where the user can click into the definition). Note, this bug only happened on a few flash cards (2 or 3). And I would think that this is something that the publisher will fix in future releases.
Overall I would rate this 4 out of 5 stars -- Joe Acosta
Useful, but interface needs improvement
Spanish Conversation
The Spanish Conversation ap is a good way for intermediate Spanish learners
to improve their Spanish on-the-go, but the interface is sometimes awkward
and confusing.
The idioms and expressions are well chosen and appropriate for the
intermediate level and it is useful to read them in context and to hear them
spoken by a native Spanish speaker. As you read along with the dialogue, it
is very useful to be able to click on an expression and instantly see a
definition in both Spanish and English.
The application is ideal for filling a few minutes of down-time while on the
go, but one of the drawbacks is that the application doesn’t automatically
return to where you left off or keep track of which tasks you have
completed. Instead, you need to click a box indicating whether a given task
is “finished”, “in progress” or “not started”.
The biggest drawback, however, is when the task requires you to scroll up
and down in order to find words or sentences that are not visible on the
screen. Those same tasks require you to select and drag information and it
is very difficult to scroll without accidentally dragging a word or
sentence.
I would give the application a three-star rating. It is useful for
intermediate students who can persevere through some of the frustrations of
an awkward interface.
