Super bon!
Just tested this app out while on vacation in France (Dec 2010). As a college student with a minor area of study in French, I can attest to it's usefulness and completeness. The audio pronunciation was especially helpful for words with unfamiliar structure (or origin) and appears not to be computerized text-to-speech -- that is to say, the recordings are of actual human beings. The verb tables are to die for -- they have every tense of every verb. How I wish I could have had this while taking lower level classes! In this newest version you can touch any word on any page and it will take you to the entry for that word. Note that this product is extremely similar to the Larousse online English/Français dictionary with one notable difference: the app does not require an internet connection to function (except for the audio). I found that feature to have a lot of gravity in my decision to purchase this app since I only have an iPod Touch and my WiFi situation in France was iffy at best. Also note that this app DOES NOT contain the "Translating Tool" from the Larousse website.
This app is great, but it could be even better...
In the next iPad update I would like to see the ability to hear the OTHER sentences pronounced. Does anyone else feel the same way?
When I'm studying French, I typically search for the French word that I'm learning, NOT the English word. Searching for a French word in this app brings up all kinds of wonderful sentence examples in French and it also has the English translation right next to it, BUT THEN it gives the pronunciation of the ENGLISH sentence. For learning French, I want to hear the proper FRENCH pronunciation of these sentences! Right now, for example, if I want to hear French sentences of the word "écrire" I have to search for the English word "write" in order to find and listen to sentences that use écrire in French. Now, that just seems counter intuitive to me.
So, maybe if the update could somehow integrate the option to choose which sentences I want pronounced (French or English) or just offer both at the same time.
Here is a small thing that is difficult. Personally, I always have my iPad in landscape mode. This app opens in the portrait mode and then quickly switches to landscape on its own, which is cool, UNLESS I am multitasking between apps (say if I'm trying to make flash cards or something). Every time I re-enter the app I have to wait for it to switch orientation EVEN if I lock the orientation in the tool bar!
So, perhaps a way to integrate locking the orientation of the app...
One more thing that would be beneficial would be a way to lock the search box so that if I want to only look up French words, I don't have to contend with the search box automatically switching up on me -- right now it keeps reverting to an English search.
These may seem like small things but fixing them would produce a smoother running app that would be even more useful than it already is :-)
superb dictionary
I used a cheaper dictionary before getting this app and it was not very good. This dictionary is superb. I had some friends from France staying with us this week and it had every word I needed, both in English and French, save one ("colonics"--don't ask . . . they wanted to know what it meant).
The search engine is very good. It has a full verb conjugator, so you don't have to go to another app once it gives you the verb. It switches easily from French-English to English-French. It has a "history" feature that I find very useful, giving you a history of all the words you looked up (just in case, like me, you occasionally forget what you just learned).
The dictionary does not just give you a one word translation, but also gives you--like a real dictionary--ways that the word may be used. It's not as extensive as the unabridged Robert that I use at home (which is huge), but it's way more extensive that any small or medium sized dictionary that I have used.
The pronunciation feature is very good, except for a delay of a couple of seconds, which is a little annoying. All in all, a really good dictionary that is well worth the somewhat expensive price.
