Description

Discover true 3D terrain mapping with Scenic Map as you explore the rich landscapes around the Grand Canyon and Arizona.

Scenic Map is simply the best 3D moving map available for a mobile device. Use it as you drive, fly or hike to show a digital version of the world around you. With its birds eye view you can see what lies beyond your local horizon. Scenic Map works anywhere because all of its data is contained within the app so no internet connection is needed.

As you move, you will generate a track file which you can replay. You can also import GPX tracks generated in other programs and play them. While recording or playing a track, the map will be centered on the current location and rotated towards the direction of travel and rendered in 3D with silky smooth animation. When playing a track, you can speed up, slow down, pause, restart or skip to the end.

Most mobile terrain apps must transfer their maps from servers on the internet. This can be slow in areas with only 2G coverage or completely unavailable in wilderness areas where a map would be most useful. Scenic Map solves this problem by storing all its maps inside the app as vector data and rendering them on your mobile device.

Scenic Map's combination hardware/software 3D map renderer is the first of its kind. It is so fast, it can display every road in a city the size of Los Angeles while animating in real time. While most mapping apps hide smaller roads as you zoom out, Scenic Map can display every road at every zoom level. This is helpful when you are exploring an area with few roads because you can zoom out and see all the roads, not just the major highways.

Scenic Map can store more than 1/3rd of the country in a single app because it uses its own map compression technology. The detail contained in the maps is simply stunning. You can zoom in until small terrain features only a few meters in height can be easily seen. You can zoom out until entire states are visible.

Never before have maps been this customizable. For example, you can turn on or off the roads. You can change the lighting direction or remove terrain shading entirely. You can display contour lines. You can even step through the months and watch the seasons change. Preset

Want to learn more about a map feature? Click the target icon to display its name, feature type, urban area, state, elevation and coordinates. You will also see a bearing line back to your current GPS location or from your location to a selected waypoint. The status will display the bearing direction and distance along with the map and GPS elevation, the track length, and your current speed and direction of travel.

Scenic Map Grand Canyon covers northern and central Arizona and parts of Utah, Colorado and New Mexico.

What's New in Version 1.3

2D or 3D maps. The choice is yours. Use a two finger vertical swipe to tilt the map from a 2D top down view to a 3D gound level view or anywhere in between. You can keep North pointing upwards or rotate the map freely via a user setting.

Scenic Map now employs a combination hardware/software renderer to take advantage of all the power of mobile devices. The result is simply stunning. You can now fly over terrain at hyper velocity or perform slow majestic turns around mountains or other interesting topology. Part helicopter, part jet fighter, part rocket, you are in full control.

Scenic Map turns any drive into a futuristic 3D animated experience. Now you can see beyond the immediate horizon and know what terrain is coming up just around the turn or beyond the next hill. From the window seat of a plane, you can now pinpoint your current location, heading and speed while identifying all the roads, towns and terrain features you can see below you. Please be ready to answer a lot of questions from the other people in your row (take it from personal experience).

Scenic Map 1.3 has new gestures to let you fly around, rotate, tilt and zoom the map. There is complete documentation on scenicmap.com but here is a quick guide to get you started:

There are two modes of operation: Standard Mode and Joystick Mode. To change modes touch and hold with one finger for two seconds. You will see a single ring around the point you are touching to indicate Standard Mode and double rings to indicate Joystick Mode.

In Standard Mode, use a single finger to scroll the map around as usual. Swipe gestures will scroll with momentum (the map will keep scrolling after your finger leaves the screen). A two finger sideways swipe will rotate the map's direction. A two fingered vertical swipe will adjust the map's tilt. You can also use two finger gestures to pinch and rotate the map in the standard way. Only one of the two finger gestures can be used at one time. We find this makes the map a lot easier to control.

In Joystick Mode, use a single finger to fly the camera forwards or backwards. Sideways finger motion will cause the map to rotate. The more you move your finger away from the point you first touched, the faster the map will move or turn. You can combine horizontal and vertical finger motion to orbit the camera around interesting terrain features. A two fingered horizontal swipe will move the map sideways. A two fingered vertical swipe will adjust the tilt. You can also use two fingered gestures to pinch and rotate the map but all of these gestures are spring loaded in joystick mode. In addition while using a single finger to fly the camera, you can touch with a second finger to perform sideways moves.

All the other gestures such as double tap to zoom in and triple tap to zoom out work as they did before. If you really liked the old 2D mode, it is still present in 1.3. Just tilt the map to vertical and set the North Up option in the Map Style panel (tap the gear icon in the tool bar at the top of the screen and then scroll down).

Better than trying to fold those gas station maps back up to fit in the glove compartment

To answer Mark's question, it's 256Mb. Suggest you check your internet connection. Took me about 3 minutes to download and 1 minute to install. After playing with this for a while I'm sure there is more here than most people would ever use. Even on a trip to the Grand Canyon this would give you enough info to make your trip way more enjoyable. All the places that people never get to. Hell, I'm going this spring. See ya there.

Works great!

It took less than 30 seconds to download over WiFI. My 3G data plan does not allow downloads over 20MBs. That might be the other reviewers issue.

I especially like the two finger map rotation. Really nice and extremely fast rendering engine in this app!

How big is this file?

How long does it take to download? Does it restart download if the connection is lost? This has been updating for a week over a 3G connection. Other updates are blocked. Whazzupwitdis?
