Description

The Plex application allows you to use your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch to browse and play your media (video, photos and music) using the Plex Media Server installed on your Mac or PC. You can view online media from a variety of sources. If you have Aperture, iPhoto, or iTunes installed you can also stream the content to your mobile device.

★★★ YOU MUST HAVE THE PLEX/NINE MEDIA SERVER INSTALLED AND RUNNING TO STREAM MEDIA ★★★

The application also functions as a full-featured remote for the Plex Media Center application.

The media is streamed directly from your Mac or PC, and there is no need to convert before viewing. You can stream over the Internet over 3G, but you will need to set up port forwarding to do so. The application can automatically configure a router via the new myPlex service.

Requirements:

• Any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running iPhone OS 4.0 or higher.
• An Intel Mac running Mac OS 10.5 or later, a Windows machine running Windows XP or later, or an Intel machine running Linux.
• The Plex Media Server, which is part of the Plex Media Center, available at http://www.plexapp.com
• In order to transcode to 720p (on the iPad and iPhone 4), you need at least a 2.2GHz processor.

Also note that streaming of DRM-protected content such as older music from the iTunes store, or video files purchased from iTunes, is not supported. Additionally, playing VIDEO_TS content and .ISO files is not supported.

What's New in Version 2.2

We're back with more fixes! More awesomeness! More golden eggs...whoops, wrong app.

FIX: The "long press" action now uses native iOS 4 gesture recognizers which, besides generally being more awesome, require half the hold-time. Less hold-time means happier fingers.
FIX: Make sure we only treat MP4 files that have streaming hints as Direct Playable.
FIX: Video quality settings show up correctly and actually work when in "serverless" mode.
FIX: Video quality settings can now be changed when no server is selected.
FIX: Fixes and enhancements for Direct Play, including respecting SD resolution, and we now try to direct play more videos in serverless mode. Also, we don't try to Direct Play media if it has a selected, non-embedded subtitle (which requires "burning in").
FIX: Activate localisations for Bulgarian, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Spanish, Finnish, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Turkish and Portuguese.
FIX: Better audio interruption handling (Don't pause playback if we weren't already playing, this would toggle the pause state & cause music to play from the earpiece over the top of the user's phone call).
FIX: Scrolling while images were loading could cause them to not be displayed.
FIX: Local WiFi streaming quality was being used for remote connections.
FIX: Authentication tokens are removed when signing out of myPlex.

Customer Reviews

Epic fail.

I want my $5 back. No videos will play, even after hours of fiddling with it. As a programmer and unix sys admin my rating is: EPIC FAIL.

Connection issues galore

Great concept for a remote app, but I have a terrible time connecting without restarting Plex server and the remote several times. Set down the remote for a while, like during an hour long show, then it disconnects and won't reconnect again. Real pain when I'm trying to pause the show and can't... The remote seems really broken to me, and definitely not worth ANY $$ right now. Though I'm hopeful about the future...

Soft subtitles come up as garbage characters

This would be a five star app, however, they have ignored a major problem in displaying subtitles embedded in files. These play perfectly fine on Plex for the mac, however, when streamed to an iPad or iPhone, subtitles come up as garbage.

Several versions later and it's still not fixed.
