Initially released in Japan in 1993, Secret of Mana took the world by storm with its innovative real-time battle system and gorgeously rendered world. It continues to stand out among other action RPGs for its seamless gameplay that anyone from beginner to veteran can enjoy.
One of the most memorable elements of the Mana series is the Ring Command menu system. With the single press of a button, a ring-shaped menu appears on the screen, where players can use items, change weapons, and do a variety of other actions without needing to switch screens. This Ring Command menu system for which the Mana series is so well known was first introduced in Secret of Mana and has since appeared in most games in the series.
Play as Randi and his two companions, Primm and Popoi, as they adventure all around the world. At the center of our epic story is the mystical power of Mana. Battle the empire in its quest for control of Mana. Befriend the eight elementals who wield the forces of nature itself. Numerous encounters await at every turn.

Shiny, but frustrating.
In a sudden burst of nostalgia, I recently bought both this port for my iTouch and the original on the Wii's Virtual Console. While the "shinier" graphics and pretty character portraits are a nice touch, the movement controls and general interface make the game harder to play. I find it to be a struggle to actually move in the direction you're intending for.
Also, it's somewhat of a hassle to use the Action button to talk to a merchant, then have to tap somewhere else to save/buy/sell. I think it would be much easier to have a D-pad instead for both motion and dialogue controls.
All in all, this seems to be a good port. I haven't noticed many dialogue changes thus far, the music is unchanged, and the graphics are largely improved for mobile devices. However, the gameplay itself is much simpler on an actual gamepad/controller, making the game potentially difficult to play for those who are new to this amazing game. To those gamers, I implore you to stick it out -- it's a great game that I've enjoyed playing since I was 5 years old (seriously!).
Amazing game crippled by some very annoying issues
This game is great. It's a port of a classic SNES action-RPG that set the standard for many action-RPGs that came out since. The storyline is great, the gameplay is great, the music is great, and the art is superb.
While porting the game Square Enix took the time to update the sprites to make some of them higher resolution. The gorgeous art found in the SNES classic has now been made even more beautiful. Water even reflects the clouds in the sky and the sun!
The text has been updated now. It is much smoother and made a different font. Reading on the iPhone port is much easier in my opinion.
Certain glitches in the original game have been fixed, too. For example the SNES version used to limit how far you can run away from your partners. Now, you are free to roam however far you want from your allies within an area. If you pause the game and unpause, they teleport to your location.
A secret pathway in the mushroom kingdom's (Mandango I think it's called) inn has been removed as well (It didn't lead to anything useful anyway).
Random treasure boxes appear faster after you defeat an enemy. On the SNES version I used to wait around a few seconds to see if the enemies would drop an item. Now, I don't have to wait around.
There are a few glaring issues with this port, however. First of all, the controls are glitchy. Sometimes when I'm running the item screen will randomly appear. It's pretty annoying to be brought out of the action into the item screen when I clearly didn't want it or even press the button.
Another issue is that music doesn't loop well. You can hear the music in all throughout the game fade out, stop for a fraction of a second, and restart. Note I have an iPhone 3G so this could be an issue fixed in an iOS update that I can't get.
The last issue is there is no multiplayer! This was one of my favorite multiplayer games because it took a traditionally single-player genre and gave it multiplayer mechanics. This is especially annoying because the AI for the support characters is pretty simplistic (since it was originally an SNES game). Usually I got around this by playing almost only with my friends. Now I have to rely on the game's AI which has failed me quite often.
I think the buttons could use a transparency option as well so you could adjust how much they appear on screen.
Besides these issues the game itself is very good. If you're not willing to deal with the issues found in the port I highly suggest getting it on the SNES or playing on an emulator!

Amazing game for the snes console updated and rereleased on iPhones! This was an amazing idea that should be done more often with some suggested games such as chrono trigger, final fantasy 3, earthbound and breath of fire 2 and countless more :)
